Authority on African American Youth Bereavement and Homicide Loss

to lead workshop at Summer Institute on Grief and Loss at Mount Ida College

NEWTON, Mass. - Dec. 22, 2014 - PRLog -- Tashel C. Bordere,  nationally recognized expert and authority on coping with homicide loss and grief in the African American community will be leading a workshop “Playing with Guns”: African American Youth Bereavement: Homicide Loss, Survival, and Suffocated Grief” this summer on the campus of Mount Ida College in Newton. The workshop is one in a week-long series presented by the National Center for Death Education (NCDE) that is housed on the campus.

Bordere, who is an assistant professor of Human Development and Family Studies and State Extension Specialist in Youth Development at the University of Missouri-Columbia, teaches courses on Death, Dying and Bereavement in Black Families and serves as editor of The Forum, a quarterly publication of the Association for Death Education and Counseling.

“Having Dr. Bordere with us this summer will add a unique dimension to our week-long workshop series,” says Diane Moran, Director of NCDE.  “The subject of coping with grief and loss in the African  American community could not be more timely as we reflect on recent news events,” she adds. “To understand that there is a uniqueness here is crucial.”

Bordere will explore the concept of “suffocated grief” as a culturally-relevant framework for understanding the experiences of urban youth coping with significant losses related to gun violence.  Resiliency factors will be explored as well as creative and effective approaches in work with bereaved disenfranchised youth.  “Our hope is that our attendees who work with the black community and disenfranchised African American youth will leave with a deeper understanding as well as the tools they need to serve,” Moran says.

“Our goal is to empower the workshop attendees with the tools to increase cultural trust and humility, outreach, service delivery and accessibility of resources for African American youth that serve to enfranchise their grief journeys,” says Moran.
