DONCASTER, U.K. - Dec. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- In the wee hours of a brisk May 4th Spring Morning in 2013, two American extreme endurance racers , Stan Scott, and Alan Spears, both then 64-years-old, met in front of The Red Ball Garage on 31st Street in Manhattan, New York City, for the 07:00 start of The Great Race, The Real Cannonball ~ Worlds Most Extreme Endurance Race. The race took them on a mostly easterly route across the United States on Freeway Interstate I-40, towards the finish line in Redondo Beach, California, a staggering 4,747.5648 Kilometers. The object of this race was to determine who could cross the finish line first, and be crowned 1st Place Winner of this rekindled event.

As fate would have it, neither Stan nor Alan finished The Great Race. Both were plagued by identical mechanical trouble that occurred at virtually the same time! Each suffered a disintegrated constant velocity drive belt, and disintegrated exhaust pipe. Stan was approximately 233.0 Kilometers ahead of Alan on the race course (public freeway). Alan was approximately 445 Kilometers from the finish; Stan approximately 300.

It is extremely difficult to fathom the enormity of such a race. It is even more difficult to fathom the miniscule distance separating these racers when they simultaneously dropped out for the exact same mechanical problems after having raced so many thousands of kilometers.

Although the pipe and CV belt component failures that sidelined Scott and Alan were strikingly similar, their occurrence at the same approximate point-in-time was deemed coincidental. The Malossi Kevlar Racing Belt installed on the Kymco S9 just before this race failed due to a tremendous build-up of heart.  The failure was catastrophic, causing the rear wheel to lock during peak 75-mile-per-hour traffic on the Interstate 40 Freeway. The problem could have been completely eliminated by ventilating the outer left hand primary cover, which was done following this race.

With Motor-Scooter International’s (MSI) recent announcement it will again be hosting The Great Race ~ World’s Most Extreme Motor-Scooter Endurance Race, beginning on Sunday, October 2nd 2016 in Imperial Beach, California, and racing “WFO” (wicked full-on) to Madawaska, Maine, USA, a distance of approximately 5,248.87 kilometers, three MSILSF extreme endurance racers have committed to racing this event:

         1) Linda Hurley / Yamaha Majesty 400cc. Linda has won the greatest number of extreme endurance races of any Motor-Scooter International Land-Speed Federation rider.

         2) Stan Scott / Honda CN250 Helix. Motor-Scooter International Land-Speed Federation champion extreme endurance racer, and participant in The Great Race, The Real Cannonball ~ World’s Most Extreme Motor-Scooter Endurance Race, May 2013, Manhattan, New York, to Redondo Beach, California USA.

         3) Alan Spears / Broadhurst~North Lambretta 200cc.

One of these racers, Alan Spears, is starting with a fresh old drawing board picturing a duplex drive chain and, in so doing, is eliminating what he believes is the weakest link in the scooter endurance racing chain.
