KOCHI, India - Dec. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- Even though John Lonergan’s novel ‘Antidote: Clandestine Warfare In Modern Russia’ is set in a futuristic world, it deals with a threat that is very contemporary in nature. Set in the backdrop of the souring relations between Russia and the Republic of Georgia, a group of nationalists from Georgia sets out to avenge the violence unleashed upon their country by the Russians by creating an epidemic for which there is no cure. Helping them in this mission is Joseph Karashvili, a brilliant microbiologist who creates a strain of super bacteria. While on the other side of the planet in America, Robert Cook, a member of an elite police force with a PhD in microbiology himself, inadvertently crosses path with the epidemic problem while investigating the theft of microorganisms from a lab. With time running out and the casualty list increasing every day, Cook must involve himself in a massive manhunt spanning across different countries to find the doctor and the antidote capable of stopping the epidemic.

When a group of extremists from Georgia with help from the Georgian mafia and outside help from the Chechens, decide to take the fight to the heartland of Russia, they ask a talented microbiologist Joseph to develop a new strain of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that is resistant to all known antibiotics. Even though Joseph wants to avenge the death of his countrymen by the Russians, he doesn’t want to partake in killing innocent people but the plan is soon carried out without his knowledge. That is when Robert Cook, an American policeman in charge of special crimes investigating the theft of a special bacteria gets involved in the case. Robert is a grounded hero who is disciplined, humble and yet powerful. He has a keen eye for detail and nothing escapes his gaze. And he must hunt down Joseph and get him to destroy the monster he helped create. Even though the story is set in future, the foreshadowing trouble and its consequences can be still seen in present day Georgia and its problems with Russia.

“Writing has always been my first love and I’m glad that I have been given a chance to pursue my dream and in that process, share it with everyone.” John told us when we interviewed him in connection with the book’s promotion. When we spoke with a few readers at a popular online book forum, they all had only wonderful things to say about the book and liked the consistency in the pacing of the book. They singled out the scene involving Paata delivering the strain of bacteria to Russia for its brilliance and claimed that it provided for some highly tense reading. Kevin Peter who reviewed the book for Moterwriter.com said that Antidote was a great read that had all the ingredients in it to make this a great thriller with a distinctive style of its own. He also complimented John’s ability to blend in realism and authenticity with intricate fictional plotting, to create an all round suspense thriller that also has a remarkable cast of characters.
