Remaining 11 Defendants in Quitman 12 Trial Acquitted; A Victory for Voter Rights and GOTV

ATLANTA - Dec. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- After more than four years of court battles, the remaining eleven defendants indicted and charged with voter fraud in connection with the 2010 Election in Brooks County, Georgia  - who are more commonly known as the Quitman 12 - have been fully acquitted by a Brooks County Judge.

The first of the Quitman defendants to be tried in a court of law, Ms. Lula Smart, was acquitted after two mistrials and a third trial that resulted in a final jury verdict of “not guilty” in September 2014. As a result, Prosecutors conceded that “based on the outcome of the Smart case, the State believes that it is unlikely to obtain convictions in the remaining cases.”  In a court order received by legal counsel this week, a Brooks County Judge ordered the remaining 11 defendants acquitted based on lack of evidence.
