Original works of art, fine estate jewelry items will headline Philip Weiss Auctions' Jan. 11th sale

LYNBROOK, N.Y. - Dec. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- LYNBROOK, N.Y. – Original artworks by noted, listed artists, and brilliant estate jewelry items (offered on behalf of the New York County Public Administrator), will co-headline an auction slated for Sunday, Jan. 11, by Philip Weiss Auctions, in the firm’s gallery located at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook. Hundreds of fresh to the market lots will be offered starting at 10 a.m. (EST).

The artwork will be led by a mixed media on paper by Cy Twombly (Am., 1928-2011), whose spare, childlike scribbles left him out of step with the movements of post-war American art, even as he became one of the era’s most important painters; and two works (a watercolor and ink and an oil on board) by Giorgio De Chirico (1888-1978), the noted Greek-born pre-Surrealist painter.

Also sold will be a pencil signed woodblock titled Aspen Red River by Gustave Baumann (1881-1971), the German-born American artist best known for his prints made from his detailed hand-carved wood blocks; and an oil on board painting by Willard Leroy Metcalf (Mass./N.Y., 1858-1925), who apprenticed to a wood engraver but was noted for his impressionist landscapes.

The expected star lot of the fine estate jewelry category is a stunning 3.62-carat circular brilliant diamond, GIA certified and with color I and clarity SI2. George Jensen jewelry will also be sold. The auction will also feature pottery, porcelain, lithographs, sterling silver, a collection of early tribal masks and a large collection of art glass by names such as Tiffany, Loetz, Galle and Daum.

Vintage French advertising posters will include Copertoni Impermeabili by Achille Lucien Mauzan, Quinquina Bourin by Jacques Bellenger, Anisetta Evangelisti by Carlo Biscaretti, Dubonnet Vin Tonique by A. M. Cassandre and La Menthe Pastille by Eugene Oge. Also sold will be a huge collection of Hummel and Royal Doulton figurines, plus a Tiffany dressing set.

Returning to fine art, two lots expected to generate interest are a pencil signed lithograph titled Swing Act by Rockwell Kent (N.Y., 1882-1971), a member of the rugged realist school of landscape painters famous for his illustrations in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick; and a 23 ½ inch tall bronze sculpture by the Spanish-born Canadian artist Kieff Antonio Grediaga (born in 1936).

Also sold will be a watercolor by Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) titled Beach House, an oil on board by David Davidovich Burliuk (1882-1967) titled Judaica Theme, a signed watercolor by Gifford Beal (1879-1956), an original book illustration by Frank Vincent DuMond (1865-1951), an oil on panel by Jules Richomme (1818-1903), and an oil on canvas work by Wolfgang Paalen.

Additional artwork will feature a signed lithograph by Alexander Calder, two watercolor and ink works by Peter McIntyre (Native Americans and Hong Kong Fishermen), a watercolor on paper by Mario Carreno, an oil on paper by Itzchak Tarkay, and three original oil paintings by Maurice Kish, titled Moses Breaking the Tablets, Organ Grinder With Parrot and Waiting in a Blizzard.

Also sold will be a watercolor by Mane Katz, an oil painting by Tully Filmus, an artist-signed watercolor by M. Taylor Rue, a geometric abstract oil on canvas painting by Donald Sorenson (12 feet in length), a pair of oil on canvas works by Jacques Zucker, a pen and ink by Marcel Gromaire, an oil on panel work by Fern Coppedge and a drawing on paper by Maurice Utrillo.

Other lots set to be sold include a circa 18^th century Italian School watercolor titled Temple de Minerva Medica, two oil on canvas paintings by Jose Maria Migares Fernandez, a bronze work by Fernando Botero, an oil on board by Roger Bezombes, a charcoal caricature by James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960), and Tweedledum and Tweedledee cast-iron figural andirons.

Internet bidding will be facilitated by Proxibid.com and Invaluable.com. Phone and absentee bids will also be accepted. Philip Weiss Auctions’ next big sale after this one will be on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. (EST), also in the Lynbrook gallery. Hundreds of lots dedicated mostly to militaria, rock ‘n’ roll items and Hollywood memorabilia will be sold to the highest bidder.

Then, on Sunday, Feb. 15, also at 10 a.m. in Lynbrook, Philip Weiss Auctions will hold a sale featuring sports, comics, comic art and animation. Already consigned are recently discovered, high-grade copies of Batman #1 and #2, original comic art (including Peanuts strips by Charles Schulz), a Prince Valiant drawing by Hal Foster and a Dick Tracy drawing by Chester Gould.
