CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Dec. 11, 2014 - PRLog -- Dr. Sean Freeman, Charlotte facial plastic surgeon has created the  Transconjunctivial Lower Lid Blepharoplasty with SOOF as an effective treatment for the aging lower lid. This new technique improves the results of lower eyelid surgery. SOOF stands for suborbicularis oculi fat.  The procedure corrects the puffy appearance beneath the eyes without making the area look hollow or sunken, as some other tradition eye procedures create.  Surgical rejuvenation of the lower lid is now done with this relatively simple surgery, and restores a youthful and rested look to the eye.

Dr. Freeman performs his SOOF lift blepharoplasty using an incision inside the eyelid, known as a transconjunctival incision, for the vast majority of his patients. Through many years of experience and training, he has created a way to tighten the structure that contains the protruding orbital fat, returning this area of the eye to its smooth, youthful position and appearance.

Mid-face fat that used to be under the lower lid, called the "SOOF" is used to correct the hollow appearance under the eye.

“This creates a youthful, rested look in the eyes, without any hollowness. The SOOF lift blepharoplasty is found to be very effective, and patients have great satisfaction in the results of the surgery, states Dr. Sean Freeman.”

The Center for Facial Plastic and Laser Surgery, and Dr. Freeman have been specializing in facial cosmetic surgery since 1988. He is the only facial plastic surgeon in the Charlotte area, and in all of the southeast, with this much experience in facial plastic surgery.

Other methods of operation on the lower eye lid include making an open incision beneath the eyelashes of the lower lid. This procedure, known as subciliary incision lifts the skin and muscle of the lower lid, and removes the fat from compartments underneath. This procedure does not work as well as Dr. Freeman’s SOOF technique because the fat will protrude due to the relaxation of the fascia layer, with age. The result is a bulging and hollow looking lower lid.

Other physicians will take fat from the lower lids or other areas of the body and try to graft in the fat back to the lower lids. Although the result is helpful, it is frequently prone to failure due to the fat re-absorbing, migrating or clumping. It can also lead to a change in the lower eyelid position.  Lower eyelid surgery is a serious surgery and should be done by specialists, such as Dr. Freeman, in Charlotte NC.
