COZUMEL, Mexico - Dec. 12, 2014 - PRLog -- In an effort to make every visitor’s trip more enjoyable, El Cid Timeshare strives to provide as much information as possible about activities, Mexican Culture and holidays so visitors can maximize their vacation time.  Mexico has a rich history and culture, and there are several important events and ceremonies throughout the year which are very important.

One very interesting day is the Día de los Santos Inocentes or Day of the Holy Innocents.  Deeply rooted from the time of the birth of Jesus Christ, this tradition is one celebrated in Spain and all over Mexico including, of course, the island of Cozumel.  The meaning behind this day and the way in which it is celebrated or remember today may seem odd to some but upon examining the true meaning, visitors can see its importance.

Día de los Santos Inocentes is basically Mexico’s version of April Fools’ Day.  Many tricks are played during this day and any money that is borrowed (small sums of course) is often not paid back as a trick.  This is very childlike, which gets to the meaning of this day.  Día de los Santos Inocentes is also known as day of the child, in which the child or children in general are celebrated.  The tricks are childish, and that is the point, since children are playful and enjoy playing fun tricks and games.  Children are celebrated on this day to remember the martyred children who were executed by King Herod in Bethlehem.  The three kings who were sent to find the baby Jesus, did not carry out their mission, and thus King Herod ordered the execution of baby boys.

El Cid timeshare also wants to mention that on this day, similar to Dia De Los Muertos, when the dead are celebrated in cemeteries, Mexicans make their way to cemeteries with toys or offerings for the souls of the departed children.  The root of this tradition may be sad or dark, but remembering the children by playing games and jokes on others if a fun way of keeping their memory alive.  Mexicans believe that as the living remember the dead and keep their memory alive, their soul lives on. That is the story of Mexican April Fools’ Day.  Be on the look out for tricks and jokes in Cozumel especially, the island community really gets into this tradition.
