Lee Enterprises Consultant Analyzes Status of Emerging Technologies

In the article, Dr. Kutney notes that among pyrolysis options – torrefaction, pyrolysis (slow and fast), gasification - the technology of choice is influenced by the feedstock and by the desired end product.  He notes that a major commercial obstacle faced by many is the ability to identify a market for the final product(s) that provides an acceptable return from the capital and operating expenses.  “The commercial status of these technologies is the focus of this study”, says Dr. Kutney. “I do not believe that the pyrolysis initiative is going down in flames, but I do recognize that it has cooled off a bit”.  Kutney notes many new projects are under consideration at this time.  He says that the industry is at a tipping point, and notes that “nothing sparks life into an emerging technology like commercial success.
