Berwyn Public Library Promotes Pre-K Literacy

MINNEAPOLIS - Dec. 8, 2014 - PRLog -- The Berwyn Public Library (http://www.berwynlibrary.org/) in Berwyn, IL is proud to partner with myON (http://www.myon.com/), a personalized digital literacy platform (http://thefutureinreading.myon.com/overview/complete-literacy-program), in providing access for all community pre-K children. The library started offering complimentary access to the online platform’s nearly 5,000 authentic titles to preschool children in August of 2014.

While providing access to titles from Pre-K publishers such as Disney, Orca Picture Books, Flowerpot Press, Highlights High Five, Sourcebooks and Warner Bros Global Publishing the library hopes to encourage all students to become kindergarten ready throughout the entire Berwyn community. The program will encompass public Pre-K students of both North and South Berwyn, as well as private and homeschooled Pre-K students.

“As a librarian, I’ve always been dedicated to promoting reading and literacy to readers of all ages, and what better way to do that than to capture the imaginations and hearts of my community’s youngest readers,” says Tammy Clausen, director of Berwyn Public Library. “From what I’ve seen, myON is the best platform to do exactly that because of its extensive library of Pre-K titles and ability to allow readers to actively engage with the digital texts in a lasting and impactful manner. Providing this type of access to the preschool aged children of Berwyn will improve their ability to learn throughout the academic process, and I’m happy to be a part of that process.”

By leveraging key federal initiatives such as Bridge the Word Gap and the University of Reno study that details that books in home are as important as parents' education in determining children's education level, the entire Berwyn community is working to build a strong community of readers to ensure that every child has the best possible chance of success. Currently South Berwyn District 100 has implemented myON district wide and first year results indicate extensive gains reading growth attributed to myON. Most recently, at the October 22 Board meeting, the district shared results of a Virtual Summer School program that engaged students in reading on myON.  Results showed that 75% of students who enrolled in Virtual Summer School maintained or increased their reading level over the summer.
