Rotary Club Of South Jacksonville (Florida) Launches Oratory Competition For High School Seniors

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Dec. 7, 2014 - PRLog -- The Rotary Club of South Jacksonville is conducting an Oratory Competition among 46 First Coast High Schools. Through a series of speech contests, regional winners and finalists will compete for a minimum of $10,000 in college scholarship funds with the winner capturing a $4,000 scholarship.

Each school will hold its own competition in of December to determine a representative who will then participate in regional contests. Regionals will be conducted the week of January 19. Winners of the regionals will compete in the finals on February 12.

121 Financial Credit Union has joined with the Southside Rotary Club to serve as the title sponsor for the event.

“We have held an oratory/scholarship program the past two years,” reported Southside Rotary president William Jaycox. “But it has been on a very small scale.

“Using the same model, we felt we had the potential to reach students throughout the entire First Coast and to offer more opportunities for scholarship money with an expanded competition program, particularly with the help of a financial partner like 121 Financial Credit Union.”

According to Southside Rotary’s project chairman Doug Matthews, 27 high schools have signed on so far for this year’s competition. Seniors who are interested in competing should contact their school principal to see if their school has signed up.

The Southside club is accepting donations for the Oratory Competition. Additional funds will be used to either increase scholarship amounts, offer more scholarships or to create an endowment for future scholarships.
