DALLAS - Dec. 5, 2014 - PRLog -- Halff Associates, Inc. (Halff), one of the nation’s leading engineering/architecture consulting firms, is proud to announce that the firm’s S.M. Wright Freeway Reconstruction project has received the Greater Dallas Planning Council (GDPC) Dream Study Merit Award.  The Dream Study Award goes to urban design projects that exhibit a positive urban design vision and illuminate the practice of urban design and planning. This award will be presented at the Urban Design Awards & Holiday Reception on Tuesday, December 9, 2014, from 6-8 PM at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas.

The S.M. Wright Freeway Reconstruction project will be the first Texas freeway to be torn down and reconstructed as a boulevard.  S.M. Wright is currently a 10-lane, high-speed elevated freeway.  The planned reconstruction replaces it as a landscaped, six-lane, low-speed boulevard without bridges. When reconstructed, the two miles between I-45 and C.F. Hawn Freeway of multi-modal streetscape will reconnect the currently physically divided community; buffer the adjoining residences; attract development opportunities in the neighborhood; and implement low-impact development and context-sensitive design principles.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), with support from the City of Dallas, commissioned Halff’s multi-disciplined team of transportation engineers, planners, landscape architects, historical architects, and environmental scientists to conduct preliminary planning, design analyses, and environmental studies for the planning stage of the project.

The mission of GDPC is to shape, promote and advocate a creative sustainable future for the Dallas region.  For more information on GDPC, see http://www.gdpc.org.
