BRUSSELS - Dec. 5, 2014 - PRLog -- Corrugated is a multi-billion euro state-of-the-art industry that protects 75% of European goods in transit. Its environmental credentials are indisputable – it is 100% recyclable –and is extremely space-efficient, resulting in fewer trucks on the road.

Improvements in corrugated manufacturing processes means that compared to 15 years ago, an average corrugated box is more than five percent lighter and contains around seven percent more recycled material. About 40% of corrugated packaging is used to protect food products and helps to minimise food waste.

For those in the fresh produce sector handling vegetables and fruit items, corrugated packaging is the safest solution because every box, tray and carton is only used once as a virgin packaging before it is recycled. This enables growers, retailers and consumers to have optimum hygiene conditions.

A very high temperature is involved in the manufacturing process of corrugated, which exceeds 100 °C whether using virgin fibre or recycled material. Cross-contamination of one product delivery with another is impossible because each box is used only once.

This aspect of single-use is important: recently, for example, an outbreak of the destructive banana disease Fusarium wilt TR4 has led United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation to urge countries to be vigilant and take measures to prevent further contamination.

Innovation is at the core of the European corrugated industry: significant investment in new printing techniques and innovative design has transformed corrugated into high quality shelf ready packaging (SRP) for promoting goods in-store. Corrugated’s printability makes it ideal for branding, promotion, supply chain information as well as smartphone apps, QR codes and scanning.

The success of discounters such as Aldi and Lidl is being aided by corrugated packaging’s eye-catching designs and its efficiency within the shelf replenishment process. Over 90% of the discounters' products use SRP, compared with only about 40% of non-discounters.
