White Pony Express

White Pony Express, WPE, is an all-volunteer organization, headquartered in Walnut Creek, with 250 active volunteers. Carol Weyland Conner, PhD, founded White Pony Express in September 2013 when she discovered that many retail business owners would welcome a way to donate their surplus food and goods to neighbors in need if someone were able to pick up and deliver them. She developed White Pony Express and the Free General Store as community service programs to enable those who have more than they need to easily give to those with less, so that all can share in the happiness and abundance of life. WPE is a qualified 501(c)(3) charity.Visit www.whiteponeyexpress.org.

White Pony Express Free General Store

The Free General Store, FGS, designed to alleviate poverty in Contra Costa County, identifies people in need and community programs that are helping these people lift themselves out of poverty. It then partners with donors, picking up their surplus goods and delivering them to neighbors in need, either through community groups that serve them, or directly at innovative events called “mobile boutiques.”

During 2014, FGS gave away, free of charge, approximately 20,000 items of new and gently used clothing for adults and children, and toys, books, and games for children with a value exceeding $200,000. FGS held fourteen mobile boutiques and served more than 2,000 neighbors in need in Contra Costa County. Visit www.freegeneralstore.org for more information and to view event videos.

White Pony Express Food Rescue Program

White Pony Express operates the only food rescue and relay program solely dedicated to serving Contra Costa County and recently celebrated its first year anniversary. The food rescue program, headquartered in Walnut Creek, was founded by Carol Weyland Conner, PhD, when she became aware that, in a county of tremendous abundance, many friends and neighbors were still going hungry in the County. Her idea was to create a food rescue program where nutritious surplus food could be picked up and delivered directly from food retailers to local service organizations serving those in need, free of charge.

Year-to-date achievements for White Pony Express include:

•More than 800,000 lb. of food at a discounted value of more than $1.3 million has been delivered—enough to provide 533,333 meals to those in need.

•The amount of nutritious food delivered has grown to 3,000 lb. per day.

•The WPE volunteer base has grown from 100 to more than 250 people.

•WPE has partnered with more than 100 donors including Whole Foods, Nob Hill Foods, Costco, Sprouts Farmers' Market, The Cheesecake Factory, Noah's Bagels, Morruci's Deli, Rocco's Pizza, and Walmart, among others.

•WPE has served more than 40 recipient partners, including the county's largest providers such as Loaves and Fishes, Monument Crisis Center, Shelter, Inc., Bay Area Rescue Mission, Brookside Shelter, Love-A-Child Homeless Recovery Shelter, Don Brown Shelter, Hope House, Greater Richmond Interfaith Program, and Contra Costa Interfaith Housing, as well as other homeless shelters, recovery centers, homes for the disabled, meal providers, pantries, day-labor centers, and cooking classes for low-income students.
