New Henriksen LiftView And Awarelight Off-load Hook Systems Boost Boat Operation Safety

TONSBERG, Norway - Nov. 26, 2014 - PRLog -- The new LiftView and Awarelight systems have been developed by the company to provide an additional level of information and control so that ship owners can closely monitor the condition and progress of their boat launching operations. The two systems were originally designed to be used together but can now work independently as stand-alone safety features that can be fitted to any of the hooks in the Henriksen range.

     The dangers that can arise from attempting to lift an overloaded boat have now been addressed by the new Henriksen LiftView system. A high quality sensor gives a precise visual indication of the hook’s load in real time and sounds an alarm for the operator if safety levels are exceeded. This might occur through carrying excess cargo and passengers or by shipping large quantities of water in rough sea conditions. The LiftView system includes a visual display for the coxswain that shows in real time the weight being lifted in relation to the hook’s safety parameters. It also provides a measurement of the degrees of pitch and roll to which the lift is being subjected and stores all of this data for long term safety monitoring. The retained data can be analysed so a maintenance routine based on actual boat operations can be implemented and it can also be used to optimise boat and crane design based on actual load data.

     With the entire weight of the boat, its passengers, crew and its cargo being dependent upon a single, relatively small piece of metal, Henriksen engineers believe that the importance of this data should not be underestimated. All boat lift operators should pay close attention to the long term stresses to which their hooks are exposed and they should never be tempted to cut corners with their metallurgical quality, design or maintenance.      Safe operations are also now further enhanced by the introduction of the new Henriksen Awarelight that can be used independently or in conjunction with a LiftView installation. It provides a visual indicator that has been developed to overcome the communication problem that many crane operators can encounter when the boat is being lowered or lifted for a substantial distance. A bright LED light is positioned near the hook from where its beam is directed upward so that it is clearly visible to the crane operator but does not disturb the vision of those on the boat. When the hook is closed around the lifting ring and the boat is secure, the coxswain will press the L&R button. The AwareLight will then emit a continuous light, telling the crane operator that the boat is ready to be lifted off its cradle and launched. As the boat nears the water and the hook is activated by the operator on board and made ready for automatic off-load release, the light flashes slowly. When the boat is on the water and the hook has been opened the light begins to flash rapidly. During boat recovery the sequence is reversed so that when the light begins to flash the crane operator will see it as the signal to commence lifting.
