CAMBRIDGE, U.K. - Nov. 24, 2014 - PRLog -- November this year saw the long-awaited launch of the new version of the space-trading game Elite: Dangerous. This event was 30 years in the making and a group of the games’ most ardent fans chose to mark the occasion in a very special way.

The Elite community teamed up to collect exactly £2209.84 or 22-09-1984 – the date of the release of the original Elite game three decades ago. The money was presented to the game’s founder, David Braben by TV personality Kate Russell who recently released her debut novel set in the Elite universe.

With the words, ‘What do you give a guy who has 400 billion star systems and who is known by the community as the Creator? Answer – Nothing,’ Kate handed over a cheque for £1104.92 to go to the charity Special Effect and a cheque for £1104.92 to go to the charity Games Aid.

Despite Kate’s words the Elite community had every intention of marking the occasion with something for the Creator and his team. To prolonged applause and laughter, David Braben was then presented with a giant pizza box. This mirrored the long development process where the Elite community has marked every major stage release with a huge pizza order sent to Frontier’s team.

On this occasion the contents of the box were a plaque, made by Iain McNeil, that read, ‘Thank you for making the whole galaxy our playground,’ and a guestbook signed with expressions of thanks from Elite fans from around the globe.

Charities will continue to benefit from the ongoing evolution of Elite: Dangerous and its associated fiction. Every sale of Kate Russell’s novel nets a percentage to Special Effect. Dan Grubb, CEO of Fantastic Books Publishing told me, ‘All our projects and books have a charity donation attached. We believe the world of the 21st century should be a world of mutual support. Kate chose Special Effect as her charity. They do amazing work adapting video gaming hardware for people with disabilities.’
