Restoring Ecosystems to Reverse Global Warming Event Welcomes Virgin Earth Challenge as Sponsor

Conference exploring carbon capture potential of soil gains support of Sir Richard Branson’s innovation prize for scalable, sustainable ways of taking carbon out of the air.

LEXINGTON, Mass. - Nov. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- The Virgin Earth Challenge (VEC) is welcomed as a premier sponsor of the upcoming Biodiversity for a Livable Climate (BLC) conference, "Restoring Ecosystems to Reverse Global Warming." This event, co-sponsored by the Tufts Institute for the Environment and the Tufts Center for International Environment and Resource Policy, will take place November 21-23, 2014 at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.

Launched by Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson in February 2007, the Virgin Earth Challenge is a $25 million innovation prize for scalable and sustainable ways of drawing carbon out of the atmosphere in pursuit of a stable climate system and healthy oceans.

VEC Manager David Addison said, "It’s increasingly apparent that many emissions reduction scenarios which avoid a 1.5-2°C temperature rise by 2100 also require a significant amount of carbon removal. Reducing carbon sources and increasing carbon sinks are ultimately two sides of the same mitigation coin, especially if the world wants to see CO2 levels decrease on anything other than geologic timescales."

“In addition to supporting wider economic, social and environmental benefits, our analyses have shown that a lot of the relatively ‘low hanging fruit’ in the carbon removal landscape may be found in the more sustainable, restorative management of terrestrial ecosystems around the world,” continued Addison. “But there are many challenges to overcome to scale such approaches in reality: from empowering and enabling landowners, to working out and then monitoring and verifying the right approaches in the right places. The Virgin Earth Challenge is glad to support Biodiversity for a Livable Climate and its timely conference: encouraging people to share knowledge and expertise and to work together in the pursuit of ‘restoring ecosystems to reverse global warming.’ ”

Adam Sacks, Executive Director of BLC, commented, "Ecological restoration offers a hopeful climate future of natural carbon sinks, restored biodiversity, and enhanced food security. We are delighted to welcome Virgin Earth Challenge as a sponsor."

The conference’s other leading sponsors include the 11th Hour Project, the Savory Institute, Applied Ecological Services, the Bionutrient Food Association, the Institute for Sustainability and Post-Carbon Education at Bristol Community College, Cambridge Naturals, Carbon Drawdown Solutions, EPIC Grass-Fed Meat Bars, Flag Hill Farm, Friends of the Alewife Reservation, the Massachusetts Chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association, and Wright-Locke Farm.

Conference partners include the 2015 International Year of Soils program of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, Better Future Project, the Carbon Farming Course at the Resilience Foundation, The Carbon Underground, Chelsea Green Publishing, Citizens’ Climate Lobby, the Arthur Morgan Institute for Community Solutions, the Ecological Landscape Alliance, Edible Landscapes, Food Tank, Gardens for Health International, Global Coral Reef Alliance, Green Cambridge, Healthy Soils Australia, the International Biochar Initiative, Kiss the Ground, Marion Institute, the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions, the Massachusetts Climate Action Network, Mni Rainwater Harvesting, the Organic Consumers Association, Planetary Emissions Management Forest Legacy Carbon Initiative, Polyface Farm, the Port Orford Community Stewardship Area, Project Drawdown, Quincy Climate Action Network, Remineralize the Earth, the Schumacher Center for a New Economics, Shared Harvest CSA, Somerville Climate Action, the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, Sustainable Milton, Sustainable World Media, and Tree of Life Sustainable Development Consulting.
