Ovum defines the OnApp Federation and Marketplace as a “win-win proposition”

A new Ovum report acknowledges the strength of OnApp’s long-term strategy

LONDON - Nov. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- OnApp has announced that leading analyst firm Ovum has published an independent analysis of OnApp’s federated cloud strategy in a new research report, OnApp IaaS Cloud Federation: Ahead of Its Time, authored by Senior Analyst Laurent Lachal.

The new Ovum report helps service providers and enterprises understand the evolution of the OnApp Federation, which currently offers compute and CDN capacity in 170 locations, 113 cities and 43 countries; discusses why OnApp’s federated cloud is important for service providers, end users and other vendors; and offers recommendations for uptake, development and improvement.

"Ovum has been expecting the rise of federations based on similar technology from the likes of Microsoft, Parallels, and VMware (or HP and IBM) for the past four years,” writes Lachal in the report. “To our disappointment, besides OnApp, we have yet to find the right combination of long-term strategy and short-term execution. In comparison to OnApp’s federation and related marketplace, the other marketplaces, growing in number as they may be, are mostly glorified catalogs.”

The OnApp Federation is a global network of cloud service providers, running on the OnApp cloud platform, who can buy and sell CDN and compute capacity on demand through a wholesale service provider-to-service provider marketplace. Lachal writes that the OnApp Federation is a “win-win” for hosting service providers, virtual service providers and an increasing number of third parties, and describes its potential as a challenger to the Amazon cloud.

“OnApp is a company with a plan and a long-term vision and increasing significant momentum with its federation model,” he states, adding:  ”The OnApp Federation, if it builds momentum, could eventually if not challenge, at least provide a noteworthy alternative to Amazon Web Services (AWS). For this reason alone, cloud service providers and consumers alike should pay close attention to OnApp’s current efforts and forthcoming plans, and either take advantage or emulate them.”

Commenting on the report, OnApp CEO Ditlev Bredahl said: "What we're building with the OnApp Federation, together with more than 3,000 service providers around the world, is a new category of marketplace for IT infrastructure. The geographic locations in which an application and its data run are becoming really important for compliance, privacy, speed and many other reasons. The vision is to give applications on-demand access to large volumes of compute capacity in hundreds of locations worldwide through a single interface or API - not just in a handful of availability zones - making it easy to solve the data locality issue at a stroke."

"To do that, we're hooking up service providers around the world and enabling them to deliver that global infrastructure by combining their own datacenters and networks with resources from the OnApp Federation," Ditlev Bredahl said. "They use the Federation to extend their reach and give customers as much local, national or international infrastructure as they need for their applications. Their customers can do business with their local provider of choice - with proper SLAs and support - and get access to a pool of global infrastructure, with one UI, one support relationship and one invoice - not a hodge-podge catalog of different services. That's what makes the OnApp cloud federation stand apart, and that's what is driving its growth."

The OnApp Federation launched in 2011 with OnApp CDN, the first federated Content Delivery Network for service providers.  In July 2014 OnApp announce the addition of compute resources to the Federation, which will offer federated compute (CPU, RAM and storage) under the same wholesale service provider-to-service-provider marketplace model.  The compute federation is expected to reach General Availability around the end of 2014, and is currently in beta testing with a number of customers, and through cloud.net.
