Alistair Bromhead Ltd Recommends Follow up of Manual Handling Induction Training

When new recruits are introduced to their job, their induction training will include something on manual handling. Yet, in a half day induction led by another employee, there is a great deal to cover and manual handling may be a small part of this.

ASHTEAD, U.K. - Nov. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- The manual handling aspect of the induction process may take up as little of the time as 15 minutes, with instructions on how to avoid injury while lifting and moving items, plus how to operate an evacuation chair on the upper storeys. The business has done its duty; the employee is considered trained in manual handling techniques. Frequently that is the end of the matter, and no further training is offered.

A Risky Business

However, it doesn’t follow that the employee is then safe from injury, does not pose a risk to others through ignorance, or can safely help a disabled member of staff out of the building in an emergency. Unless further instruction and practice of techniques takes place, the related risks remain high.

While such training costs time and money, falling foul of the Health and Safety inspectors can also be costly. The Fee For Intervention, the cost per hour for an inspector’s time in discovering problems and helping to put them right, is currently £124.

Mitigate the Cost of Training

Dr Alistair Bromhead (http://www.abromhead.co.uk (http://www.abromhead.co.uk/about-us.asp)) is one of the foremost experts on health and safety in the country. Recognising the need to keep costs to a minimum, he recommends training in-house instructors to run manual handling refresher courses at regular intervals. After the relatively small initial investment, manual handling training for the entire organisation can be provided at no additional cost.

With this in mind, Alistair Bromhead Ltd provides the nationally recognised City & Guilds Manual Handling Train the Trainer Certificate course, which is a popular way of adding a professional qualification to the CVs of the holders. They can then join the manual handling certification scheme run jointly by Alistair Bromhead Ltd, Proskills and The National Skills Academy for Materials, Production and Supply. See more about this at http://www.abromhead.co.uk/news.asp?ArticleID=65.

Having staff registered under this scheme also gives the business a better standing with the regulators and with insurance companies. They know that the induction programme and follow up sessions will be far more effective when run by expert trainers who have an intimate knowledge of the business operations and have access to a full support network following their Alistair Bromhead courses.
