Stromberg’s ceiling panels are made from glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC). It is lightweight, versatile and durable – the ideal substance for ceiling panels. Different types of ceiling panels were designed for several subway stations including the Dey and Fulton Street stations near the new World Trade Center. These included stationary panels as well as hinged, lockable access panels. These were precast, with hundreds of panels being delivered and installed on site within the tight time constraints. The schedule for this project was particularly accelerated in order to allow former New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg, to take the first ride through the stations before his term expired. Safety is a priority in all Stromberg’s designs. These ceiling panels include some access panels with locks and gas hinges designed to protect maintenance workers by preventing the panels from swinging open too quickly. Perforated panels on the street level are covered with co-polyester translucent panels that allow natural light to filter into the station while protecting commuters from the elements. The GFRC used to manufacture the ceiling panels for the Fulton Street subways is ideal in the following ways: It is non-toxic and eligible for LEED points. It is made of minerals and will not burn, acting like a thermal regulator when exposed to flames, protecting the materials behind it. It is not affected by weather conditions, acid rain and chemicals. It is low maintenance, retains its original beauty and is made to last. Stromberg’s GFRC ceiling panels are tough enough to handle America’s busiest rapid transit line and one of the world’s largest public transportation systems. When commenting on the new subway system, MTA Chairman Tom Prendergrast stated, "I don't think you can overstate the importance of great public spaces like this to a city like ours. Great cities like New York need great public spaces to grow and to thrive. They create community, they're our brand, and they define our city." The Fulton Center is located at the intersection of Fulton Street and Broadway in Lower Manhattan, New York City. The complex officially opened on November 10th, 2014.
