Far From Home is a character-driven story that shows the impact a positive community can have on the life of another,” said Philip Hessler, Producer of Far From Home. “Our goal with the film was simple: inspire. No matter where you come from or what you’ve been through, there is always a chance to live out your dreams. Brolin’s story is proof of this.”

The two-year cinematic project traces Brolin’s life back in Kampala, Uganda as a child living with his father and seven siblings to his transition of arriving in the U.S. at age 11 to be with his mother and discovering a passion for the sport of snowboarding. Woven into the film’s fabric is Brolin’s struggle to find direction and adoption in his new country, and snowboarding is his outlet. A talented snowboarder and student, Brolin is hoping to become the first Ugandan to compete in snowboard slopestyle at the 2018 Winter Olympics, all while studying as a pre-med student at Westminster College in Utah.

Brolin’s road to success has not been an easy one. It’s his perseverance that inspired the making of the Far From Home film, and it’s his story that viewers will find captivating.

Phillip first met Brolin 10 years ago, two days after he emigrated from Uganda to a small suburb outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Brolin was 11 when he landed in Boston, and often speaks of “living in fear” as the challenges of acclimating to his new life were fraught with bullying, isolation, and depression. Perhaps through divine intervention, he found sanctuary in the most unlikely of places – the snowboarding community on the icy slopes of Massachusetts.

Now, nearly a decade later with a growing snowboarding career and love for the medical field, Brolin lives in Salt Lake City where he charges hard on his board and in the classroom studying towards his doctorate in neuro-oncology at Westminster College.

The creators of Far From Home are hoping the film can provide the platform Brolin needs to rally the support of his nation in order to represent Uganda in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

“To me, this film is all about overcoming adversity, persevering through tough times, finding community, and never backing down from chasing your dreams,” said Brolin. “No matter how dire a situation might be and how alone one may feel there is always a way out. I hope the film can inspire others in difficult situations and help them through similar hardships – that’s what ultimately made me want to share my story."

Far From Home is directed by Galen Knowles and produced by Phillip Hessler and Adam Schellenberg.
