COLUMBIA, S.C. - Nov. 17, 2014 - PRLog -- Columbia, SC, November, 2014 - The Eye Center, a pioneer in refractive surgery and comprehensive eye care in South Carolina, has recently announced that its practice’s services will also include manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS), a revolutionary technique that allows for effective removal of a cataract even in the most challenging cases. This minimally invasive procedure, while highly effective, is not a widely used technique. At the Eye Center, however, three of their surgeons are highly trained in MSICS and as the only doctors who perform this procedure in the Central South Carolina area, are often referred more challenging cases from other cataract surgeons.

“Cataract surgery in its modern form, uses ultrasound to break up a cataract through a 2.4 mm incision that requires no stitches,” says Dr. Beau Bryan of The Eye Center. “In some cases, however, a cataract may be too dense to be effectively eliminated through ultrasound. When this happens, surgeons have traditionally had no other option than to perform an earlier version of cataract surgery that requires a very large incision and many stitches. This certainly is not ideal. This is why we offer MSICS as an effective, less invasive alternative.”

Manual small incision cataract surgery addresses those cataracts that are too dense to be eliminated by ultrasound. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a 7 mm incision to remove the cataract in one piece. This is a much smaller incision than the older method and does not require stitches.

MSICS is often performed by missionaries in areas of the world where people do not have access to standard eye care and ultrasound technology is not available. The surgeons at The Eye Center were trained in MSICS in this environment and advanced their expertise through the Christian Ophthalmology Convention. The team continues to provide this successful procedure to those for whom conventional ultrasound technique is not an option.

“As a team, we are proud to be able to offer this truly unique and effective procedure to our patients,” says Dr. Bryan. “It has always been our goal to stay on trend with the techniques that can truly transform lives. Manual small incision cataract surgery opens up new possibilities for those suffering with cataracts and we’re thrilled to be able to offer this option to our patients. http://www.eyeseenaturally.com/
