MANHATTAN, N.Y. - Nov. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- A smart kurta is an essential part of every woman's closet, and you should have at least one as a part of your daily wardrobe.

Kurtas over the years

Ever since it evolved, a kurta has been traditional attire for men and women living in South Asia. In the early days, a kurta was primarily worn by men. But since then, it has evolved into a must-have outfit for women as well. The interesting fact about a kurta is that it is not identified on the basis of a particular region, unlike other outfits which have a defined identity. It has always been a very popular all across.

In contrast to the wide variety of styles found today, a kurta was typically very simple without any intricate designs or embellishments. The most commonly used fabrics include cotton, silk, khadi and georgette. Today, a kurta is as synonymous with Indian fashion as a saree.

Styling of Kurtas Tunics

Over the last few years, kurtis and tunics have become really popular. As with shirts, kurtis never go out of style. In fact, their styles evolve over the seasons mainly due to their comfort factor. A long top, with or without buttons, generally till the length of thigh and paired with churidar or salwar pants and a dupatta - typically forms a salwar kameez look.

A short kurta worn over jeans is an evergreen combination and goes well with most body types. If a woman has a good body, she can wear a kurta with a strap and if she has a fuller body the kurta can be won with cap sleeves.

Asymmetrical kurtis and short empire line blouses worn with jeans are emerging as the latest style of kurtis. Short asymmetrical kurtas are a good option for all body types.

However, if you don't want to wear a kurti, you can always go for a long tunic. Tunics are a modern adaptation of the kurti - they are smarter and chic (and a more figure forgiving option!). A popular style is the Indianized version of a tunic, which is longer and embroidered.

Kaftans and ponchos are other variations of kurtis. However, you should avoid kaftans if you are fairly healthy. With its excess fabric, a kaftan look adds weight to your body.

Kurtas for Occasions

For your daily wear, a soft cotton or khadi kurtas are perfect due to their comfort and ease. For special occasions like a party, a silk or a georgette kurta decorated with embroidery should be the preferred pick.

Accessories to go with Kurtas

A kurti looks great if worn with silver or artificial jewelry. You can wear them with dangling jewelry and bracelets to add elegance to your look.
