For Joe, to describe someone as a leader is to say that they have enough integrity, mettle, and self-assuredness that people will follow them. While these can be natural traits, often they need to be built up, or at the very least polished. “When I talk about developing a leader, it’s important to know what I’m not talking about as well. I believe there is a difference between leading through a person and leading a person who can shape others. One is just a figurehead with no real authority, and people recognize that. The other is someone who has clear boundaries on what is and is not his or her responsibility, takes on challenges that are too big for him or her to complete alone, and is willing to push himself or herself and others to achieve. I’m working to create the second type.”

“Empowerment is a big buzzword in today’s business world, but I’m not sure how many people really know what it means,” smiled Joe. “The basic idea is that power changes hands. It moves from one place or person to another. If you’re not willing to give up power, then you’re not empowering anyone.”

One of the most effective methods for transferring this power is communication in all varieties, including verbal and non-verbal. “There are some very specific ways to communicate that will empower others,” explained Joe. “First, don’t use overly-complicated terms. Impressing someone by how smart you are makes them feel inferior, not empowered.”

“Speak in positives, using words like will and can to model a powerful mindset,” Joe continued. “Use open-ended questions whenever possible to help the person to whom you are speaking develop the ability to think through a response. Perhaps most importantly, criticize very carefully. Even constructive criticism can make a person feel weak and incompetent. Choose your words wisely, and cushion potentially painful observations with a positive before and after.”

Finally, Joe had this to say about transferring power to others: “Lack of confidence will ruin any effort you make at empowering someone. Most people will only set goals and take on challenges they feel confident about accomplishing. When you build confidence, you empower.”
