Istanbul Is Not Southern Turkey

MARMARIS, Turkey - Nov. 11, 2014 - PRLog -- It seems apparent that some travel companies and some yacht charter companies portray Istanbul as a part of Southern Turkey or that it is located in the Eastern Mediterranean. Firstly this is geographically incorrect and has nothing to do with the southern coastline of Turkey's Mediterranean.

Istanbul is located in the Marmara Sea, in the far northwestern part of Turkey. The Marmara Sea runs into the Aegean Sea. As you continue down south from the  Aegean Sea, over to the east, you reach the Eastern Mediterranean of Turkey.

Why it is marketed or offered as such is either lack of geographical knowledge (even though there is the internet to find out the actual information) or a marketing tactic since when you talk about Turkey the first place that generally comes to mind is Istanbul or it could be another reason. However Istanbul is not Southern Turkey.

It is known that some holidaymakers interested in sailing along the southern coast ask, where the closest port to embark from for their Mediterranean yacht charter holiday - from Istanbul - not knowing that it is quite the distance between the two regions. Also unaware that access to the south coast is only possible by travelling by car (8 - 12 hours) or by plane (around an 1 hour) to anyone of the coastal airports with a connecting flight.

So let's set the facts straight. While Istanbul is in an altogether different region from the southern shores of Turkey, airports that travellers can fly to from Istanbul are: Milas which serves Bodrum harbor; Dalaman which serves the harbors of Marmaris, Gocek and Fethiye; and Antalya International Airport which servers the coastal city of Antalya.

Southern Turkey should not be promoted with photos of Istanbul unless it is part of the tour package, as that is an incorrect representation of the southern region overall.  Places of interest such as the Kizkulesi, the Bosphorus, the famous mosques in Istanbul, Istiklal Street, Taksim Square, Topkapi Palace, and many other sites in Istanbul have nothing to do with the Eastern Mediterranean coastline of Turkey.
