Spa Adriana Celebrates 30 Beautiful Years in Huntington

Nestled in the heart of Huntington Village, NY, Spa Adriana has been paving the way for trends on Long Island for 30 years thanks to the dynamic husband-and-wife team of John and Adriana Vater.

John and Adriana have proven to be the perfect pair in business as well as in life. The two met working alongside one another when John, then a successful fashion photographer, fell for Adriana’s natural talent as she worked her magic doing hair and makeup for the models. They found a shared passion for creativity and business, and together established Spa Adriana 30 years ago.

“It was Adriana’s natural ability to make others feel good which drew me to her,” said John Vater, co-founder, Spa Adriana. “Adriana has a passion for healing others, while making them feel truly beautiful.”

They established Spa Adriana in 1984 to set an example of environmental leadership and responsibility. It is a “green business,” from the furniture and fixtures, products and packaging to the high-touch skin and wellness treatments provided to clients. As an Aveda salon and spa, Spa Adriana continues the organic trend in hair- and skincare pioneered by Aveda by using Aveda products exclusively (all of which are plant-derived). In fact, the Vaters have incorporated their admiration and respect for the earth into the very fabric of the salon: all building materials (including stucco, flooring and paint) used in the development of Spa Adriana are environmentally friendly.

From day one, they have worked diligently to not only build Spa Adriana into a thriving 4,600 square foot business employing 21 team members, but to leverage that success into a platform for championing environmental issues and educating Long Island’s youth on environmental responsibility.

Spa Adriana has propelled into a community success story. The business is proud to have been named one of the Top 200 fastest growing spas and salons in the country by Salon Today magazine as well as being granted a business proclamation from the Town of Huntington. In addition, Adriana was honored by Huntington’s Town Board as Businesswoman of Distinction (2005).

Their participation in New York City’s Fashion Week every September and February, providing hair and makeup services for the world’s foremost fashion designers, helps maintain their leadership in the competitive New York beauty and fashion industry.

Together, John and Adriana have embarked on another business adventure: establishing Ceviche Tours, a company that provides sustainable ecotourism to the indigenous peoples of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. This fragile reef environment is part of the second largest barrier reef on the planet, and serves as the nursery of the Caribbean and the migratory path of sea turtles, water foul, game fishes and the largest fish in the world, the whale shark.

Through education and photo identification efforts, it is Spa Adriana’s goal to be part of a worldwide effort to protect and preserve the whale sharks. As participants on whale shark tours, guests are invited to be part of those identification and tracking efforts, serving as “Citizen Scientists” and contributing in this environmental endeavor.

Ceviche Tours helps ensure the long-term survival not only of the marine ecosystem in Isla Mujeres, but also of the community itself. The people of Isla Mujeres are an excellent example of a small community that can – through sustainable ecotourism and environmental efforts -- flourish by making the right use of its local resources.
