Follow on Google News | Houston Hurricanes FC sign ex-Glasgow Celtic player Paul ByrneBy: Houston Hurricanes FC Ex-Glasgow Celtic player Paul Byrne was today revealed as the organisation's new high profile player and it keeps the tradition for the club in bringing star players from the Glasgow Giants to the city of Houston. Back in the old days of the original NASL, Houston Hurricanes employed Celtic legend Bobby Lennox as a star player and although the Hurricanes may not be playing at that same level in todays soccer pyramid, this signing can be seen as a major coup for the club as it looks to build for the future. Byrne was used to playing in front of tens of thousand so supporters at the famous Celtic Park Stadium but will still cherish getting back on the field doing what he loves best, playing soccer. He will also be pleased at signing for yet another club playing in the famous 'Hoops' saying, "I'm really looking forward to being part of a great club with a great history within U.S. Soccer history. Bobby Lennox obviously played for the club back in the day and he is a legend with Glasgow Celtic, I just want to play my part and do my job. I will do my coaching and play as well as I can in order to help the young players at the club." Club President Brendan Keyes said, "We are very excited to have Paul on board. Not since the great Bobby Lennox have the Hurricanes had such a high profile player/coach in the squad. The rest of the players are really excited to play alongside a player of such experience and he will have no worries commanding respect from the current Bhoys as they know what Paul has achieved in his career." Paul Byrne was signed by Arsenal legend Liam Brady to Glasgow Celtic and his defining moment for the club was scoring against the clubs fiercest rivals Glasgow Rangers in one of the biggest derby matches on the planet, the Old Firm derby on January 4th, 1995 in front of 46'000 fans! Byrne spent two seasons at Celtic before moving on to English side Brighton, Southend United and then moved back home to Ireland to play with a series of Irish League sides. The big news remains that the current Houston Hurricanes, in their third incarnation, have signed ex Glasgow Celtic player Paul Byrne at least until the end of this current season.
