CHELMSFORD, U.K. - Nov. 4, 2014 - PRLog -- Hammam. The very word conjures up images of marble-tiled surroundings, doused in hot steam, the thick molasses-like soap penetrating your muscles until they are soft, supple and deliciously relaxed … what better way to start New Year?

Wellbeing holiday experts Satvada Retreats include a nurturing hammam as part of its luxury New Year Yoga Holiday. Expect exquisite Moroccan architecture, cave-like rooms of varying temperatures, and being pummeled into a clean, calm state by excellent strong-handed local massage therapists.

The tradition of the hammam, Arabic for ‘spreader of warmth’, dates back to the Romans and Byzantines. An important part of Middle Eastern culture, because washing and cleanliness was such an essential aspect of Islam, these gorgeous public bath-houses were usually built next to a marketplace or mosque and evolved to become a place for socialising and an essential part of traditional daily life.

“I love the hammam experience,” says Lucia Cockcroft, co-founder of Satvada Retreats. “First, you are guided into a warm room, naked (or almost naked), and then told to sit or lie on a marble slap. The therapist then proceeds to scrub and wash you with traditional black soap, often made from olive oil, and full of healthy, natural, local ingredients. The mixture is vigorously rubbed into your body, and then left for 15 minutes or so whilst you spend some time in a hotter room, whilst the soap is absorbed.“

After this, your whole body is scrubbed and your hair thoroughly washed, often by simply pouring big buckets of water from above. Then it’s time to put your feet up, maybe with a sweet mint tea. “It's a visceral experience,” says Lucia. “Not exactly relaxing, yet you generally leave feeling invigorated, marvelously clean and thoroughly renewed, both mentally and physically. People often remark that having a hammam is like going back to childhood, where you are bathed and cared for.''

Satvada’s New Year Yoga Holiday costs from £949 pp (two sharing a room) which includes all yoga sessions, five nights’ full-board (excluding one evening meal where you are free to enjoy one of Marrakech’s fabulous restaurants), fruit, tea/coffee, afternoon cake and a super-relaxing hammanbathing experience. Transfers can be arranged on request (15 euros return). Flights extra. Call 020 8133 5995
