With a projection that 80% of Canadian citizens will struggle with lower back pain during their lifetime, hope is now available. Low back pain, which typically begins as a result of normal daily activities, can be avoided with a few fairly simple steps.

Because the lumbar spine, the lower back where the spine curves in toward the abdomen, is vulnerable to the wear and tear of daily living, episodes of back pain are nearly inevitable.  The most acute pain in the lower back is often linked to inflammation, resulting in a decreased ability to function. Complicating the problem, when the muscles surrounding the spine tighten in defense of further damage, decreased circulation to the muscles can result, impeding the delivery of nutrients and oxygen needed to keep the soft tissue surrounding the spine healthy.

What to Do

With relatively little effort, you can avoid putting undue stress on your lower back. Using a firm mattress, one which does not sag in the middle, and sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees will help to protect your spine. Being cautious when you bend over will also help. When you tie your shoes, for example, try either sitting down or placing your foot on a stool before you bend. Using a lumbar support or even a rolled towel behind your back when you are seated for an extended period of time is also helpful. Finally, if you are experiencing lower back pain, breathing deeply from your diaphragm can help to mitigate the pain.

What Not to Do

When you find yourself in the throes of aggravated back pain, there are certain movements you should avoid. High impact exercises will only heighten the pain you feel and can cause more serious damage. Lifting and/or carrying anything heavy, as well as twisting your back, can also cause further pain and/or damage. Although stretching by curling your back into a forward bend may seem to alleviate the pain, you should avoid such movements. Equally important is to avoid remaining in any one position for more than twenty minutes.

Exercises to Enhance Strength

Although when your back hurts it is difficult to consider movement, there are a variety of exercises used to treat lower back issues and the resulting pain. Boosting strength, flexibility and muscular endurance can help sufferers alleviate the current pain, avoid future injuries and ward off the natural tendency when in pain to move incorrectly.  When doing your strengthening exercises, be sure to wear non-restrictive clothing and drink plenty of water. Focus on keeping your lower back straight so as not to worsen your symptoms. Keeping tight abdomen and core muscles will help stabilize your back as well. As always, it is important to check with your doctor before beginning any kind of rehabilitative or exercise program.
