Latest Auction at Shapiro Auctions Achieves Record Setting Results

NEW YORK - Nov. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- On its October 25 Fall auction, Shapiro Auctions achieved record setting sales. Leading the way, a rare and exclusive 1931 Soviet Agitlak gift set (Lot 70), commissioned for Nikolai Zinoviev, one of the most prominent masters of Soviet Palekh lacquer miniature painting, originally estimated at $30,000-$40,000, sold for an astonishing $305,000, establishing a record for the category.

Another unique item of historical importance, a Soviet Agitlak keepsake photo album box (Lot 69), created by the Palekh Artel of Ancient Painting, an organization responsible for executing commissions for the most important members of the Bolshevik elite in the USSR, with a high estimate of $15,000, sold for $38,750.

A rare and impressive assortment of Russian icons was also offered to buyers from the private collection of philanthropist and art collector Bernard J. Winters. Selections from the 16th and 17th centuries included a remarkable icon of the Venerable Sergius of Radonezh, circa 1600 (Lot 2; $32,500), a late 16th, early 17th century depiction of the Holy Martyr Paraskeva, with life scenes (Lot 1; $30,720), and a rare 17th century icon of the Trinity with Christ Crucified (Lot 5; $30,000). An exceptional icon of the Descent into Hell and the Resurrection from the Tomb, a spectacular example of the complex version of the Resurrection of Christ (Lot 8; $25,000) was also offered, as well as an icon of the founders of monastic life on the Solovetsky Islands, Saints Zosima and Savatiy (Lot 11; 20,000).

Other notable results included the sale of influential German Symbolist/Art Nouveau painter Franz Von Stuck’s Salome, 1920 (Lot 506), which sold for $173,000. Austrian-Hungarian genre painter Isidor Kaufmann’s Portrait of a Hasidic Jew (Lot 507) sold for $161,000. Critically acclaimed, Shanghai-born realist painter Chen Danqing’s The Country Girls, 1985 (Lot 590) sold for $50,000. And protégé of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele’s name stamped drawings on collotype plates, estimated at $7,000,-$9,000, sold for over $18,000 (Lot 505).

Also attracting a large number of bidders was Russian Impressionist painter Konstantin Korovin’s Still Life with Red Roses (Lot 140) and founding member of Mir iskusstva (World of Art) Alexandre Benois’s House in Cassis (Possibly the Ida Brown Residence) (Lot 172), created during Benois’s travels through the beautiful French countryside. Russian, Soviet non-conformist painter Boris Sveshnikov’s People with Briefcases (Lot 227), which was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1977, was also highly sought after.
