Purchasing a New Home Comes With Many Tasks, Some More Important Than Others

Michele Sliwa, Music City's Business Woman's Realtor, Helps New Homeowners With a Simple To Do List

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nov. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- Buying a new home is exciting, busy, and overwhelming. Figuring out where to start and what to do can be daunting but is so important. Every new homeowner will have a unique to-do list, but the following universal tasks serve as a good foundation for new homeowners.

Unpack all boxes within the first month of moving in; otherwise, the unpacked boxes take up storage space and create unnecessary clutter.
List all essentials not included with home purchase. Visit a local home improvement store for such things as window coverings, shower curtain rods, or landscaping tools, etc.
Adjust life insurance coverage to ensure the death benefit is sufficient to cover the new mortgage.
Establish pest control service within the first month of moving because it is far easier to prevent pests rather than to getting rid of an existing problem.
Thoroughly clean all carpets to eliminate existing stains and minimize potential allergens. This is especially important for new carpet because of loose carpet fibers.
Send change of address cards to creditors, banks, doctors, family and friends and so on.
Change drivers license address on your state issued ID card.
Introduce yourself to the neighbors. Remember that friendly neighbors are more likely to question and report suspicious people and behavior.

The excitement of buying a new home can quickly be replaced with exhaustion and chaos. By starting with a basic list and adding tasks as necessary, new homeowners will have less stress, feel more in control, and enjoy their new home.
