Senate mid-term elections shaping up to be a ‘nail-biter,’ says AMAC

Despite polls that show a majority of Americans are unhappy with Democratic policies

WASHINGTON - Oct. 31, 2014 - PRLog -- The mid-term Senate elections – once considered a sure thing for Republican incumbents and contenders – are shaping up to be a “nail-biting” event, according to Dan Weber, president of the Association of Mature American Citizens.

“It has looked like a lead-pipe cinch for Republications to wrest control of the Senate over the past several months, but as the race heads into the last stretch, Democrats are closing the gap in battleground states.  With only four days left in hotly-contested campaigns, Senate candidates in Kansas, North Carolina and Georgia are running neck-and-neck in the polls.  This, despite the fact that President Obama continues to hold that it is his policies that are on the ballot—the same policies that the majority of Americans would like to change,” Weber noted.

“You’d think it would be a piece of cake for the GOP, but the Democrats have shown they will not give up without a fight.  That, and unexpected circumstances in several key campaigns, have increased the uncertainty.

He pointed out that both Kansas and Georgia are clearly Red States, but that events there have put the Republican contenders in jeopardy.  And, he said, in North Carolina a pizza delivery man may hold the balance of power in that state’s Senate contest.

In fact, in Kansas there is actually no Democratic contender, just Republican incumbent Senator Pat Roberts who is up against an Independent, Greg Orman.  Democrat Chad Taylor suddenly and mysteriously dropped out of the race in early September.

“Since then, Orman, who has significant backing from liberal heavy-weights like Soros family, has proven to be fierce competition for Roberts.  Many consider Orman a surrogate Democrat,” Weber explained.

He said that third party candidates have emerged in several campaigns as spoilers.  In Georgia, a three way contest has incumbent Democrat Michelle Nunn up against Republican David Perdue and Libertarian Amanda Swafford.  The polls have Perdue, with about 48% of the vote, and Nunn, with 45%, within the margin of error.  Swafford has the three percent that can make the difference for either major party candidate because state law requires a runoff if no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina Democratic Senator Kay Hagen and Republican challenger, Thom Tillis, are running just a point or two apart in the polls.  But, an unlikely third-party candidate, a pizza delivery guy by the name of Sean Haugh, has been racking up 5, 6 and 7 points in the polls, making him a potential spoiler in that election.

“The Republicans still have a good chance to win control of the Senate, but it is proving to be a hard fought battle.  Thus, it is you who will decide in which direction the country will go over the next two years—each and every one of you.  And so, AMAC urges all voters, no matter where you live, to do your homework over the next four days and to pick the candidate who shares our ideals and who is most likely to offer the changes that are in our best interests.  We urge you, also, to get out of bed on Tuesday morning and make the trip to your polling places and to vote your conscience,” Weber concluded.
