HUGS of Florida, Inc. was founded in 2004 and incorporated in 2010 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity. Founder, Paula and Mark Keyser started gathering families together after their son Jeremy was born with Hydrocephalus and later diagnosed with Epilepsy and Cerebral Palsy. Their mission is to bring families together for support and help them to not feel alone. In addition, they assist with navigating the education system and advocating for special needs children.

This year, members of the Rough Riders will also be attending to hand out hundreds of teddy bears in addition to Steve Chamberland from 50 Legs and Miss Buckle Up Princess. There will also be a Sunstar Ambulance attending as well as one of the All Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Transport Units. Trophies will be awarded to the top fundraising teams.

Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of spinal fluid in the brain, which is a lifelong condition affecting over one million Americans from newborns to adults. Presently there is no cure. About 40,000 shunt operations are performed each year in the United States as standard treatment for this condition. Due to the lack of advancement in treatment methods, many people with hydrocephalus are unable to lead full and productive lives and many have multiple shunt revisions. Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy are neurological conditions that are often present with Hydrocephalus.
