Why choosing the wrong harassment training exacerbates employee relations problems

BRADENTON, Fla. - Oct. 30, 2014 - PRLog -- Pretty much everyone has either been bullied at work or has witnessed bullying. Harassment in the workplace is illegal under both federal and state law, and yet, harassment, bullying and retaliation continue despite mandated training on the topic.

Part of the problem, according to author and instructor Jennifer Hancock, is that the trainings we provide are directed to the wrong people and don’t teach them anything useful. “Most training is legal based, when what we really need is behavioral based training.” Jennifer adds “if employee relations professionals don’t know about how to stop bullying causes they will to fail to address the underlying behavior problem. As a result, they unintentionally exacerbate the problem.”

According to Jennifer, “Harassment is a behavioral problem. It requires a behavioral solution.”  Not all harassment training is alike. While legal trainings are important, they are often directed at the wrong people and fail to teach the actual victims how to get their bully to stop.”

Nearly everyone has experienced legal based harassment training and nearly everyone finds such programs useless wastes of time. They are done for compliance reasons, not with any hope that they can help change the corporate culture.
