SAN FRANCISCO - Oct. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- Women entrepreneurs from the Bay Area will gather at Thumbtack’s headquarters office today for a special event focused on scaling small businesses hosted by the National Women’s Business Council (NWBC).  Jaime Nack, a Council Member of the NWBC and successful entrepreneur from Los Angeles will lead a panel discussion entitled “You don’t have to be Superwoman to Grow and Scale your Business” featuring a diverse group of panelists from the San Francisco area.  The panel will consist of women founders ranging from a tech entrepreneur (NewboRN Solutions) to a chocolatier (Socola Chocolatier) to a restaurateur (American Grilled Cheese Kitchen).

“The number of women-owned businesses is almost equal to the number of unemployed persons in the U.S. – which means that if every women-owned business hired just one employee, the nation would be at full employment,” Nack commented.   “This shows the power of women-owned businesses to impact the national economy and we need these types of events to share lessons learned and highlight resources like Thumbtack which can help entrepreneurs get over the hurdle of making their first hire.”

The event will also introduce new research commissioned by the NWBC on microbusinesses that highlights a discrepancy between men and women who are either self-employed or run microbusinesses concluding that women-owned businesses are less likely to have hired employees than other businesses, across all industries. The study examined barriers to and opportunities for hiring among self-employed individuals and microbusinesses, with a focus on how male and female business owners make decisions to hire employees. Through investigating individual characteristics and family dynamics of business owners, firm characteristics, and external market conditions – the researchers found conditions differed in what led women to start their own businesses (i.e., lack of access to traditional markets) and a discrepancy in making hires for their microbusinesses. These findings open up an important opportunity to think through and solve for what is ultimately holding women back from growing their businesses.
