Mantel clocks, cranberry glass, artwork by Lucy Peters, more will be sold Nov. 15 in Panama City, FL

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - Oct. 26, 2014 - PRLog -- PANAMA CITY, Fla. – Original artworks by the late renowned regional painter Lucy Mustin Peters, consigned by her daughter Linda Weller, plus items from the Weller estate and other merchandise from prominent estates and collections, will be sold Saturday, Nov. 15^th, at 8 a.m. Central time, by The Specialists of the South, Inc., in the firm’s gallery at 544 East 6^th Street.

More than 40 original paintings by Ms. Peters – a mix of still lifes, Asian themed renderings and portraits, done in mediums that include oils, pastels and watercolors – will be offered. All have been lovingly kept and some of them displayed by Mrs. Weller and her husband Tom, a retired pastor, in their house. They are selling the works as they downsize into a much smaller home.

Lucile (Lucy) Mustin Peters (1911-2001) was a widely known artist throughout the South (especially in Panama City and Birmingham, Ala., where she lived and was most active). She majored in art at the University of Birmingham and studied under artists in Connecticut, Arizona, Louisiana and Japan. Her paintings were exhibited at the Visual Arts Center in Panama City.

Ms. Peters had a lifelong fascination with all things Asian, and items in her estate reflect that. Slated for auction will be Chinese four-panel screens (one tall, one diminutive), a large 19^th century decorative Oriental brass planter, and Asian miniatures and other collectible objects. Also sold will be a Queen Anne-style English desk and chair, executed in the Chinese manner.

Some of the many items in the auction include a highly decorated slipper chair, a circa-1900 Louis XV-style vitrine, a stately grandfather clock, Victorian furniture pieces (to include a pair of settees and transitional arm and side chairs), a Windsor comb-back chair, sterling silver and a lovely five-piece silver desk set, an antique cedar chest and five mirrors, to include two Chippendale-style mirrors and one Federal-style mirror.

Other items will feature impressive collections of cranberry glass and hair receivers, three slot machines, vintage maps (some of them regional, including a framed fishing chart of St. Andrews Pass in Panama City and a map of Choctawhatchee Bay), a World War II Liberty small boat engine, and a World War II-era German Luger pistol with matching numbers and additional firearms (rifles and handguns will be sold offline, at noon, in compliance with laws regarding firearms sales).

The action will continue with a 22kt gold eggshell Homer Laughlin tea service, antique pipes, a Tom Brady (Am., b. 1838) landscape painting with sheep, an antique portrait of a child in an oval frame by an unknown artist, a group of miniature framed hand-painted portraits, and many highly collectible pieces by names such as Fenton, Milkglass, Roseville, Weller, Lenox, Cloisonné and others.

The auction will also include a 10 foot by 12 foot Chinese rug that’s been in the same family since the early 1970s with a classic Asian design, an early 20^th century buffet, a dining table with four armchairs and two side chairs, a drop-leaf table, a vintage fall-front desk, a podium, a large figural mantel clock, additional mantel clocks, and a Julie Taylor (Aimee Teegarden in Friday Night Lights, Season 1) screen-worn dress, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Also in the sale are beautiful sets of china, lighting candelabra, a Martha Washington sewing cabinet, a sofa table, cut glass, amethyst glass candleholders, an amber sled shoe, Fostoria American glass, a Cuisinart six-bottle wine cellar, crocks and jugs, petrified wood bookends, a barometer, a cross collection, a telescope, golf collectibles, Scottie dog figurines and games.

Other items will include a vintage fitted hat box luggage piece, a colorful Currier & Ives panorama book from 1952, some Madame Alexander dolls, an Ideal Shirley Temple doll, cups and saucers, lamps, a rice bucket, Kutani, Christmas china, Reed & Barton Christmas spoons, fine linens, an Oriental wooden basket, brass and Oriental boxes and many other items.

The auction will get underway at 8 a.m. (CST), with previews the week leading up to auction and on auction day from 7-8 a.m. For those unable to attend in person, internet bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com.
