When the Reverend Peter Hobart disembarked in 1635 near what is now the intersection of North and Ship Streets, he knew that he had found a gem. Roughly 20 miles south of Boston, Massachusetts, Hingham has a rich history of fishing, industry and recreation. Once the leading mackerel fishing port on the eastern seaport, and later known as “Bucket Town” for the woodenware it produced, Hingham gradually became a bedroom community whose population works elsewhere for the most part. Fortunately, the town has preserved much of its historic character and additionally, the waterfront amenities, recreational facilities and outstanding educational system still makes Hingham an attractive and sought after place to call home. Hingham Through Time preserves the legacy for future generations, while also shedding light on days gone past for modern readers. By highlighting Hingham in their new book, Stephen Dempsey and Alexander Macmillan hope “this book will inspire developers and town officials to attempt to retain the small hometown feel that draws people to it. We also hope that this will perhaps inspire the Historic Commission to expand and develop new Historic Districts in Hingham.” Highlights of Hingham Through Time include: A portion of the profits are being donated to a special organization. Many never before published photographs, including from private collections of local residents. Many of the modern images are taken from the same vantage point, documents the transformation through time.
