Generally as the case worsens and there are more bugs hatching in the hair, the itchiness will get worse and you will see more scratching. This is not always a reliable gauge, though, because there is variability in itchiness. Some people are very itchy with only one bug in the hair, while others can have hundreds of bugs and feel no itchiness whatsoever. 2. Your child has a sleep-over at a friend’s house and a few days later the friend’s mom calls to tell you that her child has head lice. Sleepovers carry a high risk for children to pick up head lice from an infested child as they are in such close contact over such a prolonged period of time. Head lice crawl from head-to-head and if the children are sleeping near each other the risk of transmission is high. 3. Your son or daughter is on a sports team and other kids on the team report having head lice. Teams are notorious for having head lice spread quickly among the members. Gymnastics teams report head lice infestations as kids are spotting each other and tumbling on the same mats one after another. Team members of ball sports show their exuberance over a victory with group hugs and even occasionally share a helmet during the game. 4. You bring your child into bright light and see translucent sesame seed size things stuck to her hair near the scalp. You may be looking at nits (lice eggs). Contrary to popular belief, nits are not white; they are translucent with a little brown bug (louse nymph) inside. 5.And of course the telltale sign: you see a bug crawl out of your child’s hair. This is never a good thing vis a vis head lice. Nits are easy to overlook, and since not everybody is itchy, it may take seeing bug in the hair before a parent realizes that his or her child has had lice. Unfortunately, when it gets to this point, the head lice have usually been in the head for quite a while meaning that there is probably a substantial infestation. This is not always the case and regardless of whether an infestation is mild or advanced, the same techniques are available and effective to remove the head lice. Sokoloff tell parents, "It is important to note that head lice will not go away by themselves. They require treatment which involves physically removing the nits from the hair and killing the lice. Chemical treatments are often not effective in killing the lice and they certainly do nothing to the nits." If you discover head lice in your family, call LiceDoctors in Los Angeles at 310-923-9787.
