Follow on Google News | The Association for Science in Autism Treatment Sponsor Twins With Severe Autism In The NYC MarathonThe Association for Science in Autism Treatment - advocates for safe, effective, science-based treatments for people with autism - is sponsoring Jamie and Alex Schneider, identical twins with severe autism, in this year’s TCS NTC Marathon on Nov 2.
By: Omni Publicity Running next to Jamie and Alex Schneider in this year’s TCS New York City Marathon, you’ll get the impression that these young and handsome twins are the Big Apple’s new movers and shakes. Up and comers, you’ll think, with athletic builds and movie star looks. It’s not until you look deeply into their eye that you notice a hint of a distant gaze. Shy of their second birthday, both Jamie and Alex were diagnosed with sever autism. They grew-up much differently than most. Birthdays and holidays were just another day in their world. There were no sleep-overs or kids to grow up with, no girl friends or high school proms or life-long friendships -- just therapists repeating the same instruction over and over and over again. As you would suspect, their parents, Robyn and Allan, were devastated by the prognosis; but wasted no time in finding the best treatment for their sons. It was when the non-verbal twins were in their mid-teens when their life long-therapist suggested jogging to the Schneiders as a release for the boy’s pent-up energy. Robyn and Allan thought this was odd considering neither Jamie nor Alex could cross the street without assistance. But they gave it a try and their lives have never been the same. Running is more than a sport to the Schneiders – it’s become a way of life. Robyn said “Running is the only activity where the boys are not bound by their disability and are truly happy.” They’ve competed in more than 120 races to prepare for this year’s TCS New York City Marathon, including two Boston Marathons, two Hamptons Marathons, and one Marine Corp Marathon and last year’s NYC Marathon where they were featured on ABC Good Morning America. Jamie, who is still traumatized by the Boston Marathon bombing, suffered a leg injury but the plan is for him to run. Alex, the faster of the two, is planning to beat last year’s time of 3 hours and 14 minutes. The Schneiders hope that Alex and Jamie accomplishments will provide the inspiration for others to celebrate their challenges – and to prove to them that their triumphs can be far greater than their disabilities! It’s true that Alex and Jamie will never feel the driving rhythmic beat from speakers angled above a crowded dance floor, nor will they experience the thrill of closing the ‘big deal,’ or much else for that matter. In fact, about the only excitement they experience in their lives is derived from running, and that’s just fine with them.
