HUNTINGDON, U.K. - Oct. 23, 2014 - PRLog -- With the winter flu and cold season almost upon us we can stock up and take some steps to prepare at home for this eventuality. Having a flu jab, eating well, getting lots of exercise and sleep, and maintain good personal hygiene all help in preventing flu and colds. But what if you do fall ill? To correspond with the winter flu season, Aseptika has launched two new self-monitoring devices, which work directly with your Smartphone and Tablet: a Contactless Thermometer to track signs of feverand a Pulse Oximeter for monitoring pulmonary and cardiovascular health – all from home. These devices are now available direct from Amazon and soon from our distributors.

Popular media is full of the NHS England’s campaign to prepare us for seasonal flu, which can be more serious for those groups that have underlying conditions such as: aged over 65 years; any stage of pregnancy; have a long-term medical condition, such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease or a neurological disease; or have a weakened immune system.

One of the main differentiators between the flu and the common cold is the sudden onset of fever, with a temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or above. With the flu virus being particularly easy to pass from person to person, what better way to take your temperature than with a Contactless Thermometer, which uses infrared heat generated by your temporal artery rather than measuring your temperature in your ear. With no contact with the patient or single-use consumable, this Thermometer is simple and the reading is immediate. The latest in Bluetooth 4.0 technology, allows the Activ8rlives Contactless Thermometer to be simply linked to your Free Activ8rlives account via iOS or select Android Smartphones, where you can record all of your health and biometric data to help you stay healthy and well this winter season. The Contactless Thermometer measures body temperature but can also measure room and surface temperature, making it a handy addition to any household.

The Activ8rlivesPulse OximeterBluetooth 4.0 helps vulnerable individuals understand how their pulmonary and cardiovascular function can change throughout the week, during periods of ill health or as you change your weight and activity levels. It measures the oxygen saturation levels of blood and pulse rate, using a non-invasive monitoring technology. This is especially useful if you have Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and need to track your oxygen saturation levels and pulse rate. For people with these types of health conditions, a marked or sudden decrease in oxygen saturation and heart rate can indicate worsening health, and can help you to know when you need to contact your healthcare team.

Kevin A. Auton, Ph.D., Managing Director of Aseptika Limited, commented on the two new product launches:

“We have received great reviews from our clinical trial volunteers, their family or carers (who are often unpaid family members) and their healthcare teams for both these devices as they offer very quick and easy readings at a touch of a single button. They also have the utility of uploading data to the Activ8rlives platform to track their health parameters as part of a self-management programme, empowering patients, their family or carers to monitor for declining health in elderly or vulnerable members of the family. We can all use these devices at home to ensure we stay as well as we can and it gives us a greater sense of self-empowerment and helps us be a little more mindful of any signs of declining health that might need medical attention.”

About Aseptika Limited (Activ8rlives)

Aseptika Limited is a healthcare company developing and marketing an integrated suite of self-monitoring devices and services under the Activ8rlives brand. We are developing integrated systems which can be used by laypeople and their healthcare service providers to better self-manage (http://www.activ8rlives.com/solutions/self-monitoring-and...) long-term health conditions through self-monitoring.

The Company’s goal is to provide everyone with tools (and the understanding of how to apply them) so that most of us can keep healthy and well for most of the time. Self-management through self-monitoring is the motivation driving what we do.

Activ8rlives is unusual in that we are device agnostic, incorporating sensors and monitors ranging from consumer accessories to in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) with a focus on respiratory disease. All data is held together and can be cross analysed in the Cloud to provide forecasts and learning for the user and clinician.

The Company gained a patent in 2013 protecting the invention of a test for biomarkers (http://www.activ8rlives.com/about/news-and-events/news/20...) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the sputum of patients, which can be used to detect the on-set of an exacerbation and profile the efficacy of antibiotic treatment for each patient.

Aseptika won first place in a recent competition earlier in 2014 to reward the most “Promising eHealth EU SME”eHealth solution 2014 (http://www.activ8rlives.com/about/news-and-events/news/20...)developed by an early-stage European SME. The 2014 Competition was organized by TICBioMed and had the endorsement of the Health and Wellbeing Unit of DG CONNECT of the European Commission. The judges commended Aseptika for the integrated approach it was taking in the support of patients with long-term respiratory disease (http://www.activ8rlives.com/solutions/clinical-trials/), providing the platform to self-manage their illness through self-monitoring. Central to the Company’s “hospital-at-home” concept, is a test in which the patient measures the level of virulence of the bacteria living in their lungs which from time to time, flare into a full and repeated chest infections.

Aseptika has been shortlisted as finalists for three business innovation awards towards the end of 2014. The first is the Cambridge News Top Innovations (http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Innovations-2014/story-22802672-detail/story.html) awards, secondly the Discovery Start-up 2014 Competition (http://www.cambridgewireless.co.uk/Agenda/DS14%20-%20Agenda%20-%20Final%20V1.pdf) run by Cambridge Wireless where we were announced as a winner and the third is the Hunts Post Huntingdonshire Business Innovation (http://www.huntsbusinessawards.co.uk/) Awards 2014. The entries were for our respiratory hospital-at-home solution and biomarker test, which is currently running as the SENSOR (http://www.activ8rlives.com/sensor) clinical trial with a group of volunteer patients that suffer from COPD or severe Asthma in the Portsmouth area.
