Gladiator Finance's Chinese Economic Update - 23rd October 2014

As markets global remain volatile the latest news out of China appears to confirm a slowdown, albeit at a slower pace than many analysts thought.

The final HSBC/ Markit Flash PMI, the Manufacturers Purchasing Managers Index for September came in slightly above forecast at 50.4. Previously it was set at 50.2 with a prediction of 50.3 for its final result.

Many will see this as an indication of a slowdown despite any figure above 50 showing expansion.

This along with Factory Output close to a 5mth low saw the local indexes take a step back with both the Hang Seng and Shanghai Composite both posting losses in the region of 0.5%.

This comes as the Central Bank of China confirmed this week that they will be making available $32.5bn to midsized banks in an effort  to increase lending. The 3mth loans are seen as a way to bolster the economy from within and comes weeks after almost double the amount was made available to 5 or 6 of China's largest banks.

China has been seen as the economy that will drive the rest of the world with it. With expansion looking set to be in the region of 7.4% this year, many understand that the economy simply can't continue at that pace for the foreseeable future. What we will see is a leveling off and if the government is successful in turning its export driven economy to a domestic demand one, we can expect growth to slow down even  further.

Chinese Indexes - 23rd October 2014

Hang Seng - 23,295.60 (-0.46%)

Shanghai Comp - 2,306.08 (-0.88%)
