ARDSLEY, N.Y. - Oct. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- Archbishop Stepinac High School— the all-boys, secondary, college prep school in White Plains, NY— was honored by El Centro Hispano during the not-for-profit’s recent 40th Gala Anniversary held at a sold-out ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, White Plains.

Stepinac was cited for spearheading two new educational initiatives to help El Centro Hispano prepare Hispanic youth to succeed, one of the organization’s primary goals.  The first began in early 2013 with Stepinac students tutoring their Hispanic counterparts once a week in a variety of subjects, notably math and science.

Stepinac was also praised for its generosity in opening the doors of its technology center each Saturday to the young men and women of El Centro Hispano’s Lanza Mi Hermana(o) Mayor Academy. As a result, more than 40  Hispanic boys and girls every week are learning to become more computer literate.

Patsy Manganelli, Stepinac’s Director of Admissions who was instrumental in facilitating the community outreach programs, accepted the award on behalf of the school.

Father Thomas Collins, Stepinac President, said: “Stepinac is very proud to be recognized by our White Plains neighbor, El Centro Hispano, during its milestone celebration. We look forward to continue doing what we can to help provide the skills and knowledge the next generation of Hispanics, the fastest growing demographic in our community, will need to become future leaders.”

He added: “A Stepinac education is as much about building character as it is about graduating students who will make the grade in college and beyond. That is why community service opportunities like tutoring Hispanic youth are an integral part of the curriculum that begins for all students in their freshman year.”
