Aspire's Summit Mission - Accomplished!

Oct. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- TRISTAN Webb, Managing Director of Aspire Insurance Services and his friend Paul Francis completed a momentous task at the end of September.

They set themselves a 6 day challenge to scale North Africa’s highest peak, Mount Toubkal in Morocco, in aid of Epilepsy Research UK.

This endurance test was prompted by a close friend, whose seven year old daughter was diagnosed last year with epilepsy.  He successfully completed the 3 Peaks challenge in under 22 hours so Tristan and Paul decided they’d also embark on an adventure to raise funds for Epilepsy Research UK.

Tristan said: “We are delighted to have succeeded, despite encountering some challenging weather, but the whole thing was a great experience.”

“It’s back to earth with a bump now and business as usual” he added.

Here is Andy’s story:

In July 2013 my daughter Emelia, suddenly and without warning, started to experience seizures. Within a week she was diagnosed with epilepsy; something that she had also suffered from when she was just 1 year old but had then grown out of. Her little world and ours was turned upside overnight. The severity and frequency of her seizures increased to a point where she would experience 7-10 episodes during the day and around 4-5 during the night. The seizures would generally last 30 seconds to a minute.

She went from being a livewire, a bubbly, happy little girl who loved to dance and sing and play with her friends, to a very subdued reflection of herself. She was unable to go to school full time, was unable to go to her dancing class or to play with her friends in the park. Due to the nature of her seizures, where she would fall to the ground, we had to follow her everywhere and for a lot of the time she was confined to the living room.

One night in December 2013 at around 1am, I woke to the sound of her fitting in her bedroom. This seizure lasted around 5 minutes after which she was unresponsive, blue and limp. She was only taking a breath every 10-15 seconds. This was one of the most frightening experiences of my life as we thought we were about to lose our little princess. By the time the paramedics had arrived some 10 minutes later, she had just started to respond and after a trip to A&E she was allowed to come home. Since then she has occupied my spot in bed!

On top of the seizures, falling down provided its own hazard and on one occasion she fell head first onto the tiled kitchen floor. By this time she was getting very used to seeing doctors, nurses and paramedics. There is also the side effects of the medications that she now takes; tiredness and irritability - all of which has provided an added challenge.

Thankfully now, the seizures are controlled to a point where her days are seizure free and her nights have improved also.
