Follow on Google News | Seattle Costume Designer Turns GreenSeattle professional Costume Designer Janessa Jayne Styck takes an eco-friendly approach to costume design.
By: Janessa Jayne Styck Styck works as a costume designer in Seattle since 2008, and takes special measures to create her environmentally responsible products - professional costumes for theatre and film. "Theatre and Film affect the world mostly through performance," Styck designs her Costumes to "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle." Reduce - Fewer items made from scratch. She puts a theatre's existing stock to good use. Items can be restructured, trimmed, or dyed, creating new items from old. Reuse - Like Scarlet O'Hara, Janessa makes dresses from curtains and other items at resale stores. Styck gives yardage, from home decor items and samples, a new "second life" as costumes. It's less expensive, and eco-friendly, too. Recycle - Trash unusable garments? No! Styck donates them at collection sites, which resell them as micro fiber, for rags and blankets. This funds and supports a charitable organization, reduces its trash, and continues the cycle of reuse. Janessa Jayne Styck says "My eco-friendly methods are both cost-effective and profitable!" She even drives a Prius, so her costumes get eco-friendly transport!
