Local Physicians To Give Away Bicycle Helmets To Children

Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care in conjunction with the TMA sponsers Use Your Head, Wear a Helmet Campaign giving away free helmets to children

SAN ANTONIO - Oct. 19, 2014 - PRLog -- The physicians at Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care want to help ensure the safety of local children by giving away free bicycle helmets Thursday, October 23, 2014 from 4pm-7pm  in the Wonderland Mall of the Americas clinic located at 4522 Fredericksburg Road, Suite A11 (near Burlington Coat Factory behind Target).

The Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care give away is part of a statewide effort- Hard Hats for Little Heads-launched by the Texas Medical Association in 1994.  The program promotes fun exercise and teaches parents and children about the importance of wearing a helmet.  The event is sponsored by Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care in conjunction with the Texas Medical Association. The TMA celebrates its 20th birthday for Hard Hats for Little Heads program this month.

“Wearing a helmet for all sports on wheels –biking, skateboarding, inline skating and riding a scooter is a simple way to help ensure a child’s safety and important in preventing potential head injuries” says Dr. Thomas Spurgat, CEO.

On average, 250 children in the United States under the age of 14 die each year because of a bicycle crash.  Another 300,000 children are treated in emergency room for severe head injuries. Many of these accidents could have been prevented if the children had worn bicycle helmets.

Head injury is the most common cause of death and serious disability from bike crashes.  A helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent, yet less than half of cyclists wear one when they ride.

Any child can receive a free helmet.  Local Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care staff will be available to properly fit the helmets and provide safety information.
