FORT WORTH, Texas - Oct. 19, 2014 - PRLog -- There is a first time for everything and it was a night of firsts at the  Inaugural Ed Payne- Real Don Johnson “Bulls on the Border” Bull Bash presented by Tecate and Riveras,  the third stop of the 2014-15 “Road to Cheyenne” bull riding tour held at the Rio Grande Valley Arena. Eighteen year old Wyatt Rogers of Rose, Oklahoma, won his first bull riding championship as a professional while participating at his first Championship Bull Riding event. Simultaneously Brett Barrett, Duncan, Okla., flanked Mid States – Elite Rodeo Company bulls to win their first CBR Bull Team Challenge Championship while engaging  059 Boomer Sooner in his first  Shoot Out Round appearance.

Competing on a personal invitation from Tuff Hedeman, Rogers was one of twenty six bull riders including five world champions, the top 5 ranked bull riders in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and six rookie riders all trying to win the lion’s share of the $70,000 purse created after no single rider completed the 8 second ride in the Shoot Out Round of the last two events. “I just rode them jump for jump”, claimed the high school senior who dedicates his rides to his father who died suddenly in May.

“This year is all for my dad,” Wyatt said. Warren “Dusty” Rogers of Rose was a steer wrestler and team roper who began teaching his son to be a cowboy at an early age. Rogers, who rode his first sheep at two years old, went on to win the Jr. Bull Riding division of Little Britches at 13 before winning the Oklahoma High Bull Riding State Championship in 2013 and 2014.

Wyatt’s record breaking night began as the fourth bull rider on the draw. Following two qualified rides by veterans Jared Long and Ardie Maier, Rogers leaned on the only bull rider to ever beat him in high school rodeo competition, Sage Kimzey, for advice. “My first bull (3395 Hou’s Willing – Jayne Gang) I just climbed on and had fun and was 84.5”, said Rogers who finished 5th in Round One.  As one of only three qualified rides in the semifinal round, Rogers described his 86 point ride on Smooth Criminal (Pointed Rock), “The second bull kind of faked left and then went back to the right, but felt good.”  Being one of only two cowboys to ride both his draws, Wyatt entered the shoot-out round leading the average which earned him the number one position in choosing his bull for the final four. Rogers selected rookie bucking bull Boomer Sooner after reading the analysis of the final four bulls earlier in the day. While standing for the first time on the back of the CBR chutes, Rogers watched his three opponents.

Craig Jackson, one of two riders to come back to the final four on a one score ride, bucked off the Bucking Bull of the Year, 8034 Penny Lover. Next up was National Finals Rodeo qualifier Aaron Pass, who was only the third rider to make the whistle on Jimmy Jaynes Outside the Box, rode the rank bull for 91.5 points.  Next was the reigning World Champion Sage Kimzey who came down abnormally early on Jeff Harris’s Honkey Kat.

In the end it was Rogers who took note from owner Brett Barrett. “He blew out with a big jump and felt good, and well it all worked out, said Rogers of his first 92 point ride resulting in the high marked ride of the event.

Aaron Pass, who finished second and took home a little over $23,000 to Kaufman, Texas, claimed the lead and the first round with 90 points on Red Dirt Road of Cunningham and Scoggins.  With only seven qualified rides in round one, the semifinal round would see only three with Neil Holmes riding Mayhem, B & M Bucking Bulls for the round win at 88.5 points.

Finishing first, for the first time, in the CBR Bull Team Challenge was Reserve World Champion bull team owners, Mid States/Elite Rodeo Company. The Bull team competition features the “other side of the ride” in a 3 bull team challenge. Winning first in a competition where the bulls are competing for $25,000 in prize money, the trio of Rajun JT, One More Dip, and Gold Buckle were a combined 282.14 points for their first win after numerous second and third place finishes in previous years. The Bull Team Challenge features the crème of the crop in bucking bulls as they compete to earn points to qualify for the Road to Cheyenne World Finals featuring a $100,000 bonus to the Champion bull team at the year-end competition featured as part of the Cheyenne Frontier Days in July in Cheyenne, Wyoming. .

Immediately following the bull riding action, fans flooded the arena floor for the musical concert of country music artist Aaron Watson. Watson, has sold over 150,000 records, recorded seven #1 singles on the Texas Music Chart, and 4 albums that debuted on the Billboard charts.
