The 2014 Greensboro LUNGe Forward Run, Walk & Rally is sponsored by Parks Chevrolet in Kernersville.   Adam Parks, President of Parks Chevrolet in Kernersville, shared, “It’s very exciting to see how our event has grown over the years. I believe this is an excellent reflection of medicine’s gains for people with lung cancer, particularly in terms of advocacy, education, access and research. To further this hope-filled progress, a portion of each vehicle sold at either Parks Chevrolet in Kernersville or Parks Mazda in High Point during the month of November will be donated to the Lung Cancer Initiative. We look forward to joining everyone on November 8th as well as honoring those who have survived or that we’ve lost to this horrible disease throughout all of November’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month.”

The Lung Cancer Initiative is the state’s leading non-profit organization battling lung cancer and specializes in connecting patients, survivors, loved ones and the general public with the medical and research communities to decrease deaths while providing support to those affected by lung cancer through research, lung cancer awareness & education as well as access programs across North Carolina.  The Lung Cancer Initiative has supported advancements such as molecular testing, targeted therapies and CT scans and educates people on lung cancer symptoms,  lung diseases symptoms and what causes lung cancer. Did you know the following cancer statistic? Lung cancer claims more than 160,000 lives in the United States each year, more than any other cancer and more than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. The 5-year lung cancer survival rate has barely budged in the past decade, inching up from 15 percent to 16 percent. Lung cancer takes almost twice as many women’s lives when compared with breast cancer as well as three times as many men’s lives when compared with prostate cancer.

“In 2010, I lost my father to lung cancer. While I could not take away his pain, I can work to ensure others don’t suffer, which is why I am a passionate supporter of this event. Participants in the LUNGe Forward 5K make a direct difference to those fighting lung cancer. This is an event of hope and strength for those fighting as well as in remembrance of those we have lost. I encourage everyone in the Triad area to bring much needed attention and funding to lung cancer,” expressed Emily Parks, Event Chairperson and Board of Directors Member for the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina.

Here are some examples of how your dollars make a difference to help find a cure for cancer of the lungs:

-       $500 funds gas cards for 10 lung cancer patients to access treatment or clinical trials;

-       $250 funds 1 day of life-saving lung cancer research;

-       $100 funds our website for one week, providing critical lung cancer information and resources to over 15,000 visitors per year;

-       $50 educates one primary care physician about the proper treatment, diagnosis and referral practices for those with lung cancer;

-       $25 funds one advocate to be trained to speak publicly in the community about lung cancer, allowing more people to spread awareness about this disease; and

-       $10 allows 5 lung cancer patients to receive free educational materials.
