Is Online Shopping Armageddon for Retail?

Ali Baba the Online Giant at 25 Billion US Dollars was the largest IPO in the history of mankind, yes a Company that employees 22,000 people mostly in China, delivers over 10 million products per day, has sales in excess of a billion dollars a day, but? Has no retail space and employs no Pimple faced Salespeople.

Well, if you have pimples and your goal in life was to sit around from 9-5 waiting for Mr or Ms Customer to walk through the doors of a Mega Mall, and then you assist them to stuff those shopping bags like a turkey on Thanksgiving? Maybe you need to learn Online Customer Support, why? Online Shopping just might be the “Dottie” of retail!

Yes folks, with credit card in hand our precious customers can now shop to their hearts content day and night in the comfort of their own home for almost anything there little fingers pushing a mouse can find. No parking jerks to worry about, no traffic to get frustrated about, no need to look in the mirror to check the way you’re dressed.

You can be sitting in your PJ’s or naked if you like and grab that little plastic sucker from any bank and scream at the top of your lungs, “Add to Shopping Cart” No need to worry about sizes and fit either as when its convenient just hop into that local super mall and try on those shoes, those skiiny jeans or other stuff on, never mind buying it as joy oh joy you can save a few bucks when you rush back home put on the slippers sip on a latte and, “Click and buy”

All sounds so perfect doesn’t it? But hang on there is more. Not only can you have the joy of no fuss Pjama shopping, but according to the emails and Facebook online ads? There is a zillion dollars to be made if you open your own online store. Wow how’s that for a set of Steaknives?

So not only can you join the 10 Million++ a day that shop on Ali Baba? You can also be one of the millions of people offering to sell the same products as Ali Baba, how good is that! Yes again with that trusty little credit card you can go online and build your very own online store and be in business with drop shipped items in a jiffy.

You might be thinking at this stage why I gave this blog the title of, “Is Online Shopping the Dottie for Retail” How can I compare the dominance of Online Retail to a vicious life-sucking bitch from which there is no escape?

Well, China has a workforce of over 750 Million and only 22,000 people in China work for Ali Baba, and they are selling and delivering all those products online, the big question in a couple of years?

Where is the Pimple Faced Shop Assistant going to get a job?  I think maybe they should also learn how to drive a Delivery Van!
