MOTERWRITER.COM reviews the latest hit novel – The Lion Trees

Author Owen Thomas’s two part novel shares with us a few laughs and tears of a suburban American family.

KOCHI, India - Oct. 16, 2014 - PRLog -- The Lion Trees follows the lives of a group of characters, all members of a family and the author takes you through the socio-economic and political atmosphere of America circa 2005 and takes a sneering satirical look at American culture and all of its absurdities and obsessions. They are the Johns family; papa Hollis, mom Susan and siblings David and Tilly’s separate narrative intertwines with each other’s and sometimes stays afloat on its own. But the one thing that unites them all is Ben, Hollis and Susan’s third child and the one constant presence in all their lives. In The Lion Trees author Owen Thomas juggles moments of biting humour with moments of sadness with great aplomb.

Even though the story is built around the economic, political, social and even environmental downturn of 2005 and its consequences which affected many individuals and families, the book also talks about the limits of our self-perceptions. Everyone has a predisposed image of how they see the world and how the world sees them. But often we go wrong with both the images and therefore we end up misunderstanding our circumstances, what we think of others, what others think of us, what is being communicated to us and what we are communicating back. And getting past this self-delusion is critical if we are ever to think freely and make right choices for ourselves.

“I am obviously very excited by the positive response, forget good reviews, when people are willing to give your work even a try, it’s always a great feeling” Owen told us when we interviewed him in connection with the book’s promotion. When we spoke to a reader who had bought the book online, this is what he had to say, “I can't remember the last time I was moved so profoundly by a work of fiction. I finished the book two weeks ago and have not been able to stop talking or thinking about it. I would recommend this book to everyone.” Kevin Peter who reviewed the book for Moterwriter.com said that The Lion Trees was beautifully written and author Owen Thomas’s prose is constantly engaging, witty and sparkling with gems of fresh insight. He added that Owen’s writing flows smoothly and is highly accessible and that his deeply touching tale of a spiralling out of control family and their revival within the context a nation set by social and political changes will capture many hearts.
