A Cheap and Effective Ebola Vaccine in Less Than 6 Months?

ELYSBURG, Pa. - Oct. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- Today, Shiva Science & Technology Group kicked off a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo in an attempt to raise the 925 thousand US dollars.  Shiva needs these funds to produce an initial couple hundred doses of an Ebola vaccine.  These will be used to confirm the effectiveness and safety of a version of it's patent-pending NISP vaccine tailored to Ebola.

The NISP vaccine platform allows for the rapid, and very economical, production of vaccines.  These vaccines do not utilize live viruses for their production.  NISP stands for "Nanodisk-associated Immunogen Super Polyvalent."  These nanodisks are small rings of protein spanned by a membrane that results in them having an ability to replicate the viral envelope of many viruses, including Ebola.  The immunogen will be, in this vaccine, an antigen normally found on Ebola called GP.  The GP and the ring proteins are produced using recombinant DNA technology in the same way insulin is made today.  When put into a flask with a few other chemicals, they automatically form the nanodisks with the GP embedded in the membrane just as it is on an Ebola virus.

This is very important as the antibodies a person's immune system forms against GP present in this way are very effective at interacting with the GP on the real virus.  GP given on it's own will result in antibody creation, but those antibodies don't work very well against the real virus.  The NISP vaccine platform also allows for rapid and economical production of vaccine.  Shiva expects to be able to achieve full commercial production in less than 6 months from today.  Because of the current outbreak, Shiva expects to be able to bypass many of the normal regulatory hurdles in order to speed this vaccine to the field.
