Kitzhaber Proclaims October Head Start Awareness Month

Head Start and OPK Programs Recognized for Decades of Service to Oregon Families

SALEM, Ore. - Oct. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- Governor Kitzhaber has proclaimed October to be Head Start Awareness Month. The proclamation was delivered to Head Start directors by Megan Irwin, Acting Early Learning Systems Director. Gov Kitzhaber recognizes that Head Start is more than simply preschool.

Head Start uses a two generation approach, working with families to provide not only educational opportunities, but also meet social, psychological, health, and nutritional requirements. Head Start serves more than 12,000 children and their families every year in Oregon through federal and state grants.

Celebratory activities are happening throughout October in honor of Head Start Awareness Month. Visit www.ohsa.net to find activities in your area. Activities are being added on an ongoing basis, so check back frequently. Programs around the state will conclude Head Start Awareness Month at the Oregon Head Start Association (OHSA) Fall Conference and Meeting, Nov 5-7 in Salem. The conference will recognize 50 years of Head Start providing opportunities, as well as celebrate the 20th anniversary of OHSA. Thomas Sheridan, Senior Manager of Government Affairs for the National Head Start Association, will present the keynote address.
